This team is built in a way in which no one is THE GUY.
Five different players have had successful fall campaigns behind a powerful line that for the most part hasn’t allowed defenders to get into the backfield. The results speak for themselves.
Abbeville is averaging 51 points per game. And when the Class 2A playoffs begin Friday (against first-round opponent Batesburg-Leesville), few expect the juggernaut to slow down.
Here are five reasons why.
THOMAS BEAUFORD, QB, SENIOR
Beauford has thrown for a modest 580 yards and eight touchdowns. Those numbers alone aren’t going to blow anyone away. However, what Beauford does extremely well is protect the ball. He’s thrown just one interception all season on 48 pass attempts and has gelled with a whole bunch of different ball carriers.
NAVI MARSHALL, RB, SENIOR
Put the 5-foot-7, 160-pounder on a few different rosters and he’s certainly going to get more touches than the 37 he’s had so far. That much is clear given that he’s averaged 10.3 yards per carry and has reaches the end zone roughly once every seven carries.
TYRELL HADDON, RB, JUNIOR
Haddon has more yards than Marshall, and yet he’s still third on the team in that category. So far throughout 2020, he’s got 47 carries for 399 yards (8.5 ypc) and seven touchdowns. He’s also got six receptions for 137 yards.
MARTICO JACKSON, RB, SENIOR
Jackson is every bit of a bruiser at 5-foot-10 and 196 pounds. Like the rest of the group, his yards-per-carry figure (8.1) stands out. His 414 yards and six touchdowns have come on 51 carries, or fewer than nine per game.
J’MARION (JB) BURTON, RB, SENIOR
There is no go-to tailback in this bunch, evidenced by the fact that Burton’s team-leading 53 carries are just two more than Jackson’s. And the formulaic approach to this running game is also on display in the fact that his team-leading 418 yards are just four more than Jackson’s.
