Continue ReadingA new series of city rankings will begin with the top talent in the Central Valley District within the Sac-Joaquin Section that covers the counties of San Joaquin, Merced, Stanislaus, Tuolumne, Calaveras, and Amador. This series will be players in the 2021 class.
Each article will include a breakdown of five players with their 2019 statistics and highlight tape.
100. Jacob Taylor – Sonora – OL
Taylor was one of four Sonora Wildcats players on the offensive or defensive line to be named to Mother Lode all-league. His tape shows that he can be relied on as a pass protector and a run blocker. He is quick off the line matching up against tackles and stays on his feet playing aggressively. The Wildcats had a successful record within the Mother Lode league at 4-1 and kept up a successful streak of winning one playoff game every season since 2014.
99. Joey Sanchis – Lathrop – ATH
Even though Sanchis was named second-team defense in the Western Athletic Conference, he is also productive on offense as a receiver. He can release from the line quickly, make tough catches, and show he has quick feet getting to the ball. As a defensive back, he is a tough competitor with decent leaping ability to contest for a pass. He tied for the most interceptions and had the most receiving yards among juniors in the league.
98. Anthony Daricek – Merrill West – OL/DL
Daricek has talent on both sides of the ball at guard and defensive tackle. He is the type of player to display toughness every play and show relentless effort until the blown whistle with opponents on their backs. With this, Daricek was an honorable mention in the Tri-City Athletic League recognition.
97. Edgar Ramirez – Grace Davis – ATH
Ramirez is a versatile player in a small program such as Grace Davis. He shows that he can pretty much do a little bit of everything on the gridiron while playing linebacker and receiver but also defensive back and running back. With his performance on the field, he was named second-team in the Western Athletic Conference as a defensive end and outside backer.
96. Caden Villegas – Calaveras – DL
Calaveras had a strong defensive season and Villegas deserves credit for consistently putting pressure on the passer. He wins at the line of scrimmage, has solid footwork, and delivers big hits when getting to the ball carrier. Villegas was named Mother Lode League second-team and will begin his senior season against the defending Division 4-A state champion Escalon Cougars on Jan. 15.
