Apparently it wasn’t all about Mason Garcia.
The now-ECU freshman quarterback departed Carolina Forest after last year, but the recruiting cupboard certainly isn’t bare. The Panthers have playmakers all over both sides of the football and have Morris’s squad within earshot of yet another playoff berth in this abbreviated regular season.
These are five of the biggest reasons why.
1. Kyle Watkins – The senior quarterback moved over from the receiver position after taking some garbage-time snaps a year ago. He’s certainly more runner than Garcia was (the 5-11 frame vs. Garcia’s 6-5 one probably has something to do with that). Watkins likely switches back to receiver in college. But his time reading defenses or his basketball acumen won’t hurt his recruitment.
2. Adam Janack – The elder Janack brother is a ball-hawk. He’s already picked off two passes so far in 2020 after notching seven last fall. He’s the type of player who is frequently matched up against the top receiver on the opposing offense and is an occasional threat in the passing attack as a receiver.
3. Luke Janack – The younger of the two Janack brothers is everywhere. He had 131 tackles from his linebacker spot as a sophomore. This year, he’s surpassed 480 yards and has five scores on offense while being featured at running back. In a Week 4 win against Socastee, he went off for three offensive touchdowns and two INT returns for scores.
4. Nevon Tyler – They call him an outside linebacker, and he’s certainly got a Derrick Thomas style to his skill set. Tyler fights off blockers and is able to chew up much more space than his 220 pounds would suggest.
5. Latrell Pitts – The prototypical middle linebacker has no issue sticking his facemask into opposing lineman to get to the ball. He’s a natural tackler who has added a high-end weight regiment to his skill set.
