A trio of basketball standouts are proving that wrong this fall on the gridiron as Class of 2022 quarterbacks.
Tamin Lipsey from Ames, Eddie Burgess of Montezuma and Carson Toebe from Clear Lake all have put their talents on the hardwood over the past couple of seasons.
And all three are coming off exceptional Week 1 performances on the football field.
Tamin Lipsey – Ames
After missing all of his sophomore season with a knee injury, Tamin Lipsey put on a show in his first game as a quarterback last week for Ames.
Lipsey, who is regarded as one of the top basketball players in the nation, completed 30 of 43 passes for 369 yards with five touchdowns. He also ran for another 203 yards and scored three times.
It would be very easy for Lipsey to not worry about the rest of the Little Cyclone athletic programs. But that’s not the kind of special talent he is.
Lipsey and Ames are set to go on a break here due to COVID, but they will play Friday night against Urbandale.
Eddie Burgess – Montezuma
Montezuma’s Eddie Burgess had a sophomore season to remember, and the talented big man has picked right up where he left off.
In Week 1, Burgess threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns while running for another 109 and three more scores. He also made eight solo tackles on defense.
Last year, Burgess threw for almost 3,000 yards, ran for over 1,000 and had 69 combined touchdowns.
Carson Toebe – Clear Lake
Jaylen DeVries took his talents to the FCS level of college football, but Clear Lake did not skip a beat at the quarterback spot last Friday night.
Carson Toebe, who led the Lions on the basketball court over the winter, completed 12 of 17 passes for 292 yards with four touchdowns. He also added another 67 yards rushing with two more scores while even handling punting duties.
Toebe was a wide receiver as a sophomore, catching 12 passes for 175 yards with a pair of TDs.
