It is a fun way to get to know some of these players outside of just evaluating them. We at Prep Redzone Florida want to bring you all-access into these players, it is important to get to know them as individuals and what makes them great on the field! This series will give you the ability to get under the helmet and see what makes these prospects click and gives you behind the scenes coverage. Today we feature Kevin Spillane c/o 22 Quarterback for Sunlake High.
Kevin Spillane took Pasco County by surprise last season, he never played organized football before, but you wouldn’t have known it by watching him as a player and leader! Spillane threw for 921 yards and seven touchdowns and ran for 130 yards last year in 9 games. I’m really excited to watch Kevin lead Sunlake this season and expect him to make a substantial improvement recognizing defenses and overall, just understanding the game this season.
Talk about your sophomore season and playing organized football for the first time. What did you learn from it?
This past season was my first year ever playing tackle football as I was a baseball player for the past decade of my life. I ended up starting for varsity by the time week 1 came around after pushing my body to its limits during two-a-days in the summer. Obviously starting as a sophomore on varsity brought some nerves, but as the weeks went along my understanding for the game grew and I became more comfortable. One of the biggest things I learned from my first year was how to have a quick memory and how to look at the mistake, to learn from the mistake, and to move on to the next play.
Tell us statistically about your season last year and what are you looking to improve on the most?
Last year I played 9 games at QB for Sunlake High with 88/139, 63.3%, 1051 Total Yards, 7 TD, 6 INT. This year I plan to continue playing QB and become more mobile with speed gained in the offseason.
Who is your biggest role model and guide in your life?
One of my role models in life is Tim Tebow. His actions for the community, his leadership as an athlete, and his steps towards ending human trafficking inspire me to become the best version of myself.
What are the biggest strengths of your game currently?
One of my biggest strengths as a player is leading by example and controlling the offense. As a QB and a team captain it is my responsibility to lead the offense which I believe to be one of the strengths of my game.
Are you currently getting any interest from colleges?
No colleges have looked my way.
Talk about what it is like to play for Coach Burdick?
It is a privilege to play for a coach like Coach Burdick. Coach Burdick understands the ins and outs of the games and ensures to the players that he will do the best he can to make sure that the Sunlake Seahawk football team is a winning program.
What is it been like trying to prepare for the season with all the COVID issues?
Preparing for the season always comes down to which team puts in the hardest work. This season is no exception.
Personally, what is your goal with the game of football whether it be on the field or from it?
I want to win every time I compete… especially in football. With football being the most competitive game on the planet, it gives me the chance to be the best competitor I can be.
Quick hitters about Kevin:
Favorite player to watch is Deshaun Watson. I watch his highlights before every game.
My go to pre-game music playlist includes a bunch of Country artists. Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, and Brett Eldredge to name a few.
