Every week I use results and formulas to rank each Class 4A school and give them a tier-grade based on their rating. If your curious about how I calculate these rankings, my explanation should me the pinned tweet on my twitter @IAFootballRanks.   #1. Dowling (2-0) - 44.6057 (A+) W, 22-0 vs Valley A quick word: Dowling’s back on top after pulling off an upset win over their bitter rivals Valley. Their defense controlled the game as they made 7 sacks, 11.5 tackles for loss, and 4 total turnovers all together. Their D-Line featuring Jaylen Pettus, Chase Patton, and Russell Pearson controlled the trenches and helped teammates like Max Derry, Jack Meyer, Will Hermann, and Carson Kriegshauser make some key defensive stops. Offensively QB Jake Steingreaber and WR Mack Anderson made a couple of big connections while Louis Brooks returned a punt back for a touchdown as well.   #2. Cedar Falls (2-0) - 42.5872 (A) W, 39-0 @ Waterloo West A quick word: The Tigers managed to shut out their neighbors, the Wahawks, on Friday. [player_tooltip player_id="23841" first="Ryan" last="Ostrich"] carved up West’s defense, as he made 186 yards off of 16 carries, that’s an average of 11.6 yards per carry. QB Hunter Jacobson made up for his rocky start last week by tossing 6/10 and 2 touchdowns also. On the defensive side, [player_tooltip player_id="23980" first="Ryley" last="Barnett"] led the charge as he made 9 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and a sack against Waterloo West.   #3. Southeast Polk (2-0) - 41.6163 (A-) W, 29-0 @ Ankeny Centennial A quick word: The Rams run game took over on Friday. [player_tooltip player_id="23983" first="Titus" last="Christiansen"] got 152 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Jaguars, and [player_tooltip player_id="23942" first="Xavier" last="Nwankpa"] even took a 74-yard run to the house too. [player_tooltip player_id="23918" first="Caleb" last="Daniels"] ended up having an excellent game defensively, as he made 3 sacks on the Jaguars QB on Friday.   #4. Valley (1-1) - 41.1757 (A-) L, 0-22 @ Dowling A quick word: Many anticipated Valley going undefeated this year because of the talent they have, but Dowling just had their number on Friday. [player_tooltip player_id="22519" first="Jake" last="Rubley"] had a fairly accurate game regardless, tossing 59% despite throwing 2 picks. [player_tooltip player_id="23818" first="Matthew" last="Mahoney"] made a team-high 9 catches while [player_tooltip player_id="23946" first="Eli" last="Raridon"] made 5 receptions on the road to getting a few more Power-5 offers from Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State, and Kansas State over the past week.   #5. Iowa City West (2-0) - 41.0388 (A-) W, 56-20 vs Iowa City High A quick word: In what could be the Trojans last stand before shutting down for possibly the rest of the season, they went out on top over their crosstown rivals in the Battle for the Boot. [player_tooltip player_id="23831" first="Marcus" last="Morgan"] had an excellent performance, throwing 13/14, 229 yards, and 4 touchdowns along with a rushing touchdown too. Trey King Jr made 123 rushing yards and a touchdown as well. [player_tooltip player_id="23872" first="Grahm" last="Goering"] made 3 touchdown catches off of 5 catches plus a kick return TD, while Damarion Williams scored on both sides as well, one off of a 56-yard pass, and another off of a 40-yard pick-six.   #6. Urbandale (2-0) - 40.1121 (B+) W, 40-13 @ Ames A quick word: Urbandale gets off to a hot start this season, scoring a total of 90 points over the first two weeks. [player_tooltip player_id="23823" first="Tucker" last="Langenberg"] and [player_tooltip player_id="23811" first="Jaden" last="Harrell"] combined a total of 303 yards on the ground with Langenberg scoring 3 of the 4 touchdowns between the two. Harrell also led the defense with 8.5 tackles too.   #7. Waukee (1-1) - 39.8590 (B+) W, 21-17 vs Ankeny A quick word: The Warriors went on the comeback trail this week over my previous #1 team last week Ankeny. First TE [player_tooltip player_id="23908" first="Eddie" last="Saidat"] Jr made a bobbled catch and run for the touchdown off of the arm of Jakob Holcomb. Then with just a few seconds to go, Holcomb hits Olathe North transfer, Dale Stout, in the back corner of the endzone to win a nailbiter.   #8. Davenport North (1-0) - 39.60 (B) W, 40-7 @ Burlington A quick word: The Wildcats cruised to a victory over Burlington to open the 2020 season. North was feeling things out offensively, as they ran out two quarterbacks, and a bunch of running backs with varied success. Both QB’s sophomore Nolan Mosier and senior Zane Beebe each tossed a touchdown, while RB’s DeMarquis Hanes, Alec Brown, and Tyson Hill each rushed for over 50 yards. CB Quincy Wiseman had an excellent game defensively, as he made 7 tackles, 4 of which were for a loss, and an interception as well.   #9. Cedar Rapids Washington (2-0) - 39.5340 (B) W, 28-21 @ Cedar Rapids Kennedy A quick word: The Warriors pulled off a major upset over their crosstown rivals Kennedy. [player_tooltip player_id="23861" first="Henry" last="Clymer"] completed about 64% of his passes while throwing 224 yards and two touchdowns, both of which came off of short passes to Justin Scherrman. Defensively, Watts McBride, Romen Young, and Riley Martin each made 9 or more tackles, with Young making 3.5 of them behind the line of scrimmage.   #10. Fort Dodge (2-0) - 39.4626 (B) W, 36-20 vs Sioux City East A quick word: Although they were supposed to play Mason City, a change of opponent didn’t stop the Dodgers from taking a W over Sioux City East instead. Dayson Clayton continues his amazing start this season by rushing for 354 yards and 4 touchdowns, setting a new school record. On the defensive side, [player_tooltip player_id="23876" first="Sam" last="Daniel"] equalized the Black Raiders’ passing game by grabbing two interceptions on the day.   #11. Ankeny (1-1) - 39.0753 (B) L, 17-21 @ Waukee A quick word: The Hawks took a tough loss to a very good Waukee team, bringing them from my number one team last week, down to just outside of the top ten, but don’t expect that to be for long. [player_tooltip player_id="23828" first="Jase" last="Bauer"] had a pretty good game regardless, throwing for 64% while tossing 236 yards and a touchdown. In addition, Bauer made 130 rushing yards too, while scoring a rushing TD from 4 yards out too. Kade Somers was his favorite target on Friday, catching 7 passes for 109 yards and a 33-yard touchdown.   #12. Cedar Rapids Kennedy (1-1) - 38.3517 (B) L, 21-28 vs Cedar Rapids Washington A quick word: The Kennedy program is at a low-point right now, not because of their first loss to crosstown rivals Washington in a few years, but a positive COVID-19 within the program is going to force the Cougars to take two weeks off from the field. [player_tooltip player_id="23839" first="Max" last="White"] rushed for 201 yards and a touchdown, as well as throwing for 96 yards and another touchdown over to Mitchell Schares.   #13. Dubuque Senior (1-1) - 38.2388 (B-) W, 17-14 vs Prairie A quick word: The Rams were able to escape week 2 with a victory over Prairie off of a last-second field goal by Jacob Konrardy. [player_tooltip player_id="23836" first="Cain" last="McWilliams"] led the run game with 153 rushing yards, and Tommy Williams would score a touchdown on the ground for Senior.   #14. Johnston - 36.6347 (C+) W, 42-7 vs Des Moines Lincoln A quick word: Johnston took care of Lincoln pretty handily this week. [player_tooltip player_id="23998" first="Jack" last="Rutz"] had an excellent game as he threw 165 yards and 2 touchdowns off of an 80% completion percentage. Both of Rutz’s touchdown passes went to his star receiver [player_tooltip player_id="23819" first="Tyler" last="Moore"]. Aidan Moore also helped out the offense very much on Friday, as he scored 3 touchdown runs from inside the 10-yard line. On defense, [player_tooltip player_id="24021" first="Cade" last="Godwin"] would record a team-high 6.5 tackles and a 47-yard pick-six, one of four interceptions made by the Dragons defense against the Railsplitters.   #15. Pleasant Valley (2-0) - 37.0878 (B-) W, 24-10 vs North Scott A quick word: The Spartans get off to a hot start to the season, defeating perennial Class 1A state title contender Regina last week, and now defeating North Scott, one of the MAC’s consistently good football teams this week. QB Barrett Lindmark and RB Caden Kipper led the ground game, rushing for 61 and 110 yards respectively. Lindmark would connect with TE Kellen Hornbuckle for a 59-yard touchdown as well. Parker Sutherland would have a pretty good game defensively also, making 9.5 tackles and one interception against the North Scott offense.   #16. Des Moines Roosevelt (1-1) - 37.0184 (B-) W, 62-10 vs Des Moines East A quick word: It’s the Des Moines city school’s last stand before having to shut down, and Roosevelt at least put their season on hold on the right foot. [player_tooltip player_id="23832" first="Jaden" last="Koger"] had a career rushing day against East, as he rushed for 268 yards and 6 touchdowns against the Scarlet defense.   #17. Indianola (1-1) - 36.9837 (C+) W, 27-25 @ Norwalk #18. Dubuque Hempstead (1-1) - 36.9 (C+) L, 37-40 @ Western Dubuque #19. Bettendorf (0-1) - 36.7633 (C+) No games this week #20. Sioux City East (1-1) - 36.1904 (C+) L, 20-36 vs Fort Dodge #21. Waterloo West (1-1) - 34.8837 (C) L, 0-39 vs Cedar Falls #22. Prairie (0-2) - 34.7531 (C) L, 14-17 @ Dubuque Senior #23. Linn-Mar (0-2) - 33.2286 (C-) L, 20-24 vs Xavier   #24. Marshalltown (1-1) - 32.9857 (D+) W, 42-8 @ Newton #25. Ankeny Centennial (0-2) - 32.1486 (D+) L, 0-29 vs Southeast Polk #26. Iowa City High (1-1) - 32.1286 (D+) L, 20-56 vs Iowa City West #27. Iowa City Liberty (1-0) - 30.9380 (D) W, 7-3 @ Cedar Rapids Jefferson #28.
