COVID has forced a handful of teams to the sidelines for a period of time, but the state continues to push forward with as many games as possible.
Teams are re-working their schedules to attempt and get players as much game-film as they can, while also putting in the time to produce victories.
Week 2 of the prep season brought with it plenty of interesting games and highlight-worthy performances. Here are just a few of them.
Never Poke A Bear
No, West Des Moines Dowling did not change its nickname, but the slogan holds true.
The seven-time defending Class 4A state champions were not ranked No. 1 by many outlets coming into the season. That changed with a convincing 22-0 victory over West Des Moines Valley, the team most had in that top spot.
Until someone defeats Dowling when it matters the most, the Maroons are probably deserving of holding that top spot.
They scored 13 first quarter points to take command as Jake Steingreaber completed 9 of 14 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. Mack Anderson caught four passes for 105 yards and the score.
Dowling held [player_tooltip player_id="22519" first="Jake" last="Rubley"], a Kansas State commit, to 213 yards passing on 22 completions, as standout running back [player_tooltip player_id="23814" first="Jayden" last="Williams"] had just 54 yards on 24 carries.
As a collective unit, the Tigers produced just 15 net yards rushing and Rubley was picked off twice. Dowling's Max Derry and Jaylen Pettus each had had two of the seven sacks recorded by the defense, which had 11.5 tackles for loss and also recovered two fumbles.
Waukee Rallies Vs. Ankeny
In another key Class 4A tilt, Waukee scored 14 fourth quarter points to best Ankeny, 21-17.
Jakob Holcomb threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns, including six completions covering 116 yards and a score to Edward Saidat Jr. Alexander Linquist added 78 yards rushing.
Ankeny's [player_tooltip player_id="23828" first="Jase" last="Bauer"] threw for 236 yards and ran for another 130, but University of Iowa commit [player_tooltip player_id="23810" first="Brody" last="Brecht"] was held to just two catches for 27 yards.
Record-Setting Night For Town Of Fort Dodge
Two records were broken from teams that call Fort Dodge home last Friday night.
Dayson Clayton, a senior running back for the Dodgers, ran for a school-record 354 yards in a win over Sioux City East. The game was played at Sergeant Bluff-Luton after both teams lost their planned opponents.
Clayton, who leads the state with 679 yards, carried the ball 35 times with four touchdowns, averaging 10 yards per carry. He also caught a 27-yard touchdown.
Meanwhile, St. Edmond senior quarterback Drew Schaeffer completed 8 of 15 passes for 342 yards with three touchdowns, becoming the first Gael to ever throw for 300 yards in a single-game.
Schaeffer surpassed 1,000 yards in his career, as both Anthony Lacina and Kase Baker went over the 100-yard mark receiving.
Crazy TD Games For Burgess, Grant
Montezuma's [player_tooltip player_id="23965" first="Eddie" last="Burgess"] put on a show for the fans last Friday night, recording nine offensive touchdowns.
Burgess completed 19 of 24 passes for 375 yards and five scores, posting a quarterback rating of 210.5. He also carried the ball 10 times for 91 yards and four more scores, adding a 65-yard kickoff return to the end zone for good measure.
Meskawai Settlement's Taurice Grant, a basketball standout like Burgess, finished with nine touchdowns. Grant was 15-for-18 passing for 244 yards with six touchdowns, rushing 16 times for 196 yards and three scores.
Defending Champs Back On Track
After dropping the season opener, defending state champion Western Dubuque bounced back with a 40-37 victory over Dubuque Hempstead.
Garrett Baumhover had a career-night, completing 19 of 33 passes for 447 yards with five touchdowns. Logan Brosius was uncoverable, catching seven passes for 283 yards with three scores.
Fidone, Lewis Central Roll
[player_tooltip player_id="23806" first="Thomas" last="Fidone"], one of the top recruits in the state of Iowa who committed to Nebraska recently, showed his incredible skills as Lewis Central handled Sergeant Bluff-Luton.
Fidone, a senior, caught nine passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns as Jonah Pomrenke was 17-for-20 passing for 401 yards with three scores.
Fremont-Mills Puts Up 74
There was nothing but balance by Fremont-Mills in Week 2, as they crushed Griswold, 74-16.
Jake Malcom, one of the top players in 8-person and a Nebraska commit, completed all five of his passes attempts with two going for touchdowns. He also ran for 55 yards and two scores on three attempts as F-M ran for 309 yards.
[player_tooltip player_id="23833" first="Seth" last="Malcom"] had a kickoff return for a score and [player_tooltip player_id='156642' first='Braxton' last='Blackburn'], a freshman, recovered two fumbles - both of which he returned for touchdowns.
Koger Shines
Des Moines Roosevelt [player_tooltip player_id="23832" first="Jaden" last="Koger"] was unstoppable against Des Moines East this past week.
Koger ran the ball 27 times for 268 yards, scoring six touchdowns as the Rough Riders cruised. He also showed off his hands in the passing game, hauling in five balls for 48 more yards.
He enters Week 3 with 403 yards rushing, seven touchdowns, nine receptions, 69 yards and another score.
