The Iowa High School season is underway and a majority of teams are four weeks in, whereas some teams have had to take a week or two off because of COVID-19 concerns. I am taking a look at the statistics provided by ia.varsitybound.com and watched film on the highest producing underclassman signal callers, running backs, and receivers and broken them down. Here are the QB’s that have impressed so far this season: Junior QB, Carson Toebe, Clear Lake High School (2A) - 6’3, 190 lbs. Stat line: 906 passing yards, 9:2 TD/INT Ratio, 50% completion percentage, 126.1 passer rating, 52 rushing attempts, 252 rushing yards, 3 rushing TD’s, 4.4 yards per carry Breakdown: Though Toebe’s effrots haven’t come with results, he has shown he is one of the, if not the, best QB in Class 2A so far this season. Toebe has a quick release and knows when to release the ball after finding the open receiver. Toebe is an accurate downfield thrower who can deliver a nice ball accurately. Another dimension of his game is the running game where he factors into the running game. He’s patient when going through his progressions in order to find where the ball needs to go, to go along with his style of running that is patient in finding the space and exploiting it for gain. He’s a shifty open field player when he has the ball in his hands as he holds good athleticism. Toebe will continue to put his team into a position to win games as they’ve been so close in all of their losses. Junior QB, [player_tooltip player_id="23975" first="Tyler" last="Manske"], Algona High School (2A) - 6’2 195 lbs. Stat line: 620 passing yards, 8:3 TD/INT Ratio, 61.4% completion percentage, 135.8 passer rating, 76 rushing attempts, 308 rushing yards, 2 rushing TD’s, 4.1 yards per carry Breakdown: Algona has been close in games this year, but just haven’t quite pulled out the big play when needed, but a big part of it is the play of [player_tooltip player_id="23975" first="Tyler" last="Manske"]. Manske is an accurate passer who moves fluidly within the pocket knowing when to side step, when to step up and when to get out of the pocket to extend plays. He’s good about keeping his eyes downfield when scrambling and throws a nice touch pass over the middle of the field. He reads defenses well and has a quick burst through the hole when he is carrying the ball on the ground. If Manske continues his play Algona will be in positions to win continuously. Junior QB, Ryan Schiltz, Estherville Lincoln Central High School (2A) - 5’9, 150 lbs. Stat line: 743 passing yards, 12:2 TD/INT Ratio, 53.9% completion percentage, 124 passer rating, 43 rushing attempts, 76 rushing yards, 1.8 yards per carry Breakdown: Up until this last Friday, the Midgets have been pretty dominate so far in the early going of this season. Schiltz has been a very good signal caller for his team showing good timing on his throws getting the ball out when needed, throwing it accurately with some good arm strength behind it. When he has to improvise Schiltz is a good, fast runner who knows when he needs to break the pocket and make a play for his team. He has a good idea where the ball needs to go throughout the offense and that helps push the ball down the field for his offense. He’s a good decision maker and doesn’t turn the ball over often. Though you’d like to see more success in the run game for Schiltz, if his arm continues the way it has been they will be in a good spot going forward. Junior QB, Sawyer Wardlow, Centerville High School (2A) - 6’1, 180 lbs. Stat line: 781 passing yards, 10:8 TD/INT Ratio, 50.9% completion percentage, 111.6 passer rating, 59 rushing attempts, 281 rushing yards, 5 rushing TD’s, 4.8 yards per carry Breakdown: Centerville is sitting at .500 right now, and Sawyer Wardlow has been all over the offensive side of the ball for his team. Schiltz is a dual-threat QB, who is has fast straight line speed and is good about weaving through the defense through space to advance the football. Wardlow likes to take shots down the field and has good touch on the football that gives his receivers time to get under it and complete the catch. I would like to see more accuracy on his throws to cut down on interceptions and up that completion percentage a little but, but having Wardlow on the offense is a positive for his team. Junior QB, [player_tooltip player_id="23990" first="Carson" last="Maeder"], Davis County High School (2A) - 6’2, 160 lbs. Stat line: 696 passing yards, 9:1 TD/INT Ratio, 56.2% completion percentage, 129.3 passer rating, 39 rushing attempts, 147 rushing yards, 3 rushing TD’s, 3.8 yards per carry Breakdown: Davis County is off to a good start early in the season, and a lot of success comes from the QB position in [player_tooltip player_id="23990" first="Carson" last="Maeder"]. Maeder is good about standing tall in the pocket and delivering a throw even under pressure. Shows good patience when he does that to allow his receiver to get to the top of his route. When he is under pressure, he is good about getting out of the pocket and keeping his eyes downfield to find somene open if he can. He shows good accuracy with the football and good decision making even on the run. I liked Maeder’s film and will look to keep an eye on him as his career progresses. Sophomore QB, August Stock, Prairie City-Monroe High School (2A) - 6’2, 185 lbs. Stat line: 485 passing yards, 6:2 TD/INT Ratio, 65.9% completion percentage, 165.3 passer rating, 24 rushing attempts, 140 rushing yards, 3 rushing TD’s, 5.8 yards per carry Breakdown: The #1 team in Class 2A has been on a tear so far in the early going. Young, QB August Stock helps pace the offense for the Mustangs with his timely passing to go with accuracy and power behind his throws. Stock is a fluid runner who can pull it down and gain yardage or score a touchdown for his team. He’s good about making throws within the flow of the offense whether that be off play action or quick short-intermediate routes that gives his receivers space to work with after the catch. His pocket presence is good and can feel pressure in order to move throughout the pocket or flush it. He’s a good thrower on the run and is fully capable of running this Mustang team to another state championship. Junior QB, Michael Delzell, Camanche High School (2A) - 6’1, 185 lbs. Stat line: 727 passing yards, 6:1 TD/INT Ratio, 63.8% completion percentage, 152.3 passer rating, 13 rushing attempts, 44 rushing yards, 2 rushing TD’s, 3.4 yards per carry Breakdown: Michael Delzell for Camanche has been the leader signal caller they’ve needed in the early goings to have the 3-1 record they have. Delzell has a compact throwing motion with a quick release throwing short-intermediate passing routes into space. Delzell is calm in the pocket and delivers standing tall and accurately to his receivers. He’s good at getting out of the pocket on p[lay-action plays and finding his open receiver to make plays. Delzell with continued success could lead the Camanche team into the playoffs and surprise some teams down the road. Sophomore QB, Isaac Kacmarynski, Pella Christian High School (1A) - 6’1, 190 lbs. Stat line: 650 passing yards, 6:2 TD/INT Ratio, 48.7% completion percentage, 120.5 passer rating, 35 rushing attempts, 161 rushing yards, 2 rushing TD’s, 4.6 yards per carry Breakdown: It’s been an up and down season so far for Pella Christian, but Isaac Kacmarynski has been a solid piece to their football team. Kacmarynski is a dual-threat QB, who is an athletic runner and serves as the offenses playmaker whether he’s doing it with his legs or arm, the offense is being ran through him. He likes to throw the ball downfield for big plays and can get big chunks of yardage on plays where he throws it accurately. Accuracy is something I’d like to see improve, but it isn’t resulting in turnovers at the moment so that’s a good thing. Kacmarynski should be a solid piece to build upon going forward for the Eagles. Sophomore QB, Dylan Wiggins, West Sioux High School (1A) - 6’1, 175 lbs. Stat line: 474 passing yards, 5:4 TD/INT Ratio, 48.1% completion percentage, 99.8 passer rating, 19 rushing attempts, 60 rushing yards, 3.2 yards per carry Breakdown: West Sioux had some big shoes to fill when Hunter Dekkers departed to Iowa State this past season, and they are trying to so with Dylan Wiggins. The sophomore QB has delivered though. Wiggins is a pocket passing QB who throws a nice ball with good spin on it. He’s good at going through progressions to find an open man, and is composed with the ball in the pocket. He has things to build onto going forward, but will need to especially become more dialed in accuracy wise, but that will definitely come with time. For now, Wiggins is filling in nicely for the Falcons and will look to continue that this season. Junior QB, [player_tooltip player_id="23970" first="Maddux" last="Jones"], Cardinal High School (1A) - 6’2, 170 lbs. Stat line: 452 passing yards, 6:1 TD:INT Ratio, 68.6% completion percentage, 177.1 passer rating, 22 rushing attempts, 91 rushing yards, 3 rushing TD’s, 4.1 yards per carry Breakdown: The completion percentage may speak for itself, but Jones has been impressive in the early going of the season. He’s an accurate passer with good decision-making when throwing the ball. He has good arm strength and push the ball downfield when he has a receiver to go along with his footwork when he’s throwing it. Pre-throw his footwork is choppy, and ready to let it go when needed. He’s a big presence in the pocket and is hard to bring down, and is able to escape pressure when it comes at him. The Cardinal Comets could be a team to watch out for this season and that’s due in large part to Jones.
