Continue ReadingThe Missouri Valley Football Conference is – in my humble opinion – is the strongest FCS football conference in the entire nation, and for a long time Wisconsin has been a fertile recruiting ground for many of the conference’s 11 members. Let’s take a look at and get to know the MVFC commits from the Badger state, review their prep careers, and breakdown some of their film. Thanks for reading!
North Dakota State
Sam Jung (Neenah) DB. 5’10, 175 lbs. Was named a First Team All-State safety as a senior after posting 93 tackles, 3 TFLs, 3 INTs, and 5 PBUs. He also returned one of the interceptions for a TD. Also was honored with three First Team All-Conference sections, two All-Region picks, and two Second Team All-Conference awards as well. Totaled 1,778 career all-purpose yards and 15 TDs in his career. Division 1 Region 1 player of the year. Conference DB of the year. Conference returner of the year. Incredibly dangerous with the ball in his hands, has some wheels and has no problem hitting you as well. Good tackling form and brings a pop with him. Can cover the middle of field with ease and run the alley. Covers a ton of ground once he gets going. Just overall a superb athlete who NDSU projects as a safety. Defense and Special Teams highlights
Joe Stoffel (River Falls) TE. 6’3, 240 lbs. A three-year starter who captained the squad as a senior and was named First Team All-Conference on offense and defense in 2019, and was also named Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. Also awarded All-State Honorable Mention for both offense and defense and totaled 64 career catches for 1,173 yards and 18 TDs. Helped River Falls go 17-5 with two conference championships his final two seasons. Also was named All-Conference in hockey and baseball. Fluid athlete, especially for his size, that moves like a receiver both in his routes and after the catch. Showed good lateral agility and could throw would be defenders off him like Marshawn Lynch. Was tremendous as a run-defender on the defensive line. Good hands and shows a willingness to block that NDSU definitely needs out of their TE’s, but will need to work on using his hands instead of simply throwing a shoulder. He’s definitely most effective in the passing game. Senior Midseason
Cole Wisniewski (Sparta) LB. 6’3, 190 lbs. Was named Conference defensive player of the year and All-State HM as a DB after his senior year in-which he totaled 75 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, and two FFs. Also a 2x First Team All-Conference QB and Second Team All-Conference once as well. He helped lead Sparta to their first playoff win in school history and totaled 68 career total touchdowns and 5,400 all-purpose yards in his prep career and set school records for rushing yards and touchdowns, single-season and career touchdowns, and single-season completion percentage. Also a captain of the basketball team. Big, strong, high school safety who was the most athletic player on the field every game this past season. Showed good hips and good feet who broke on the ball well and will make his move to LB a lot easier. Good tackling technique who finishes through the ball carrier and can wrap you up or straight up smack you. Tremendous box safety and was an impressive runner from the QB position who showed natural arm strength as well. Has exactly the type of athleticism NDSU looks for in their linebackers and will be able to cover and sift through blockers. Senior Year
Bryce Friday (Markesan) DT. 6’4, 240 lbs. Three-year starter and captain as a senior. Named Conference Offensive Lineman of the year twice and Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year twice as well. 3x All-Conference awardee with two First Team selections and a Second Team honor as well. Named First Team All-State and selected to play in the WFCA All-Star game. Senior year tallied 43 tackles, 15 TFLs, two sacks. Finished his career with 119 tackles, 45 tackles for loss, eight sacks, four forced fumbles and four blocked kicks. Also a stud wrestler and won the conference championship thrice and qualified for state twice. Hard not to be impressed with Friday’s game after seeing the first play of his senior highlight tape where he basically runs with his RB step for step and lays a gigantic block to spring the TD at the end of the play. Has a very quick first step out of the DL position and plays low despite his big stature for a DLineman. Shows a variety of ways to be Olineman, gets his hands on fast and extends his arms well to read the play and shake the OL with a rip or a pull. Looks very good for 240 pounds and should hopefully retain his quickness once he adds weight. I’m very very excited to see him on the Bison DL. Senior Highlights
South Dakota
Nate Valcarcel (Whitnall) DB. 6’1, 180 lbs. Posted 78 tackles, 9 PBUs. Tremendous box safety who can beat blockers inside and still tackle RBs trying to hit the corner, and can tackle you high or low, wrap up or cut tackle, or simply hit you in the face with his shoulder. Also has the athletic ability to drop back into coverage and play man to man or run across the field to break up a deep pass in zone. Best trait comes as a tackler as he hits very hard for 180 pounds. Senior Year Defense
Nathan Goehring (Kiel) TE. 6’5, 220 lbs. All-Conference on offense, defense, and special teams. Very long TE with big strides and a great frame to add more weight. Was dangerous in the shorter passing game and slips through tacklers with ease. Explosive blocker who uses his hands well. Can be an asset in the running game or the passing game in college. Senior Year Defense and Offense Highlights
Nathan Lubinsky (Onalaska) RB. 5’10 210 lbs. Only has game highlights on his Hudl, but from those game clips you can see that Lubinsky is a bowling ball of a RB that is a powerful one-cut runner with good acceleration and who is a load to tackle. vs. Holmen vs. Monroe
University of Northern Iowa
Gunnar Kilen (Verona Area) OL. 6’6, 280 lbs. Gets out of his stance fast and low and was a versatile OLineman who played OC and OT for Verona Area. Can get to the second level quickly and throws defenders to the ground like they’re dirty laundry. Shows good technique in pass-protection and is a nasty and mean run-blocker as well. Also moves really well for 280 pounds and is a great athlete for his size. Keeps his hands inside and keeps his feet moving, always. Senior Highlights
Illinois State
Brett Spaulding (Franklin) TE. 6’6, 230 lbs. Has some great speed that can be utilized in the short, medium, or deep passing game and is effective at using his height to snag balls over his opponents. Uses his hands to create separation in the passing game and uses his hands well to catch the ball. Easily dominates in the run-game and has a ton of room to grow on his 6’6 frame. Naturally strong kid. 2019 Season Highlights
Rashad Lampkin (Brookfield Central) RB. 5’10, 190 lbs. Speedy back with great vision who is strong enough to run through arm tackles, Lampkin has some serious speed in the open field and can be a North-South runner that can also go East-West if he needs to. Has an arsenal of moves in his toolbox including a mean truckstick, stiff arm, and jump cut. Shows some strength in the blocking game that can hopefully be utilized in pass-pro in college. First Four Games highlights
Daniel Forystek (Bay Port) OL. 6’8, 275 lbs. Almost looks skinny for 275 lbs., Forystek is long with a high-motor who keeps his feet moving at all times and comes out of his stance with some explosiveness and is apt at pulling and is an effective run-blocker. Not a lot of pass-pro in his tape. Has a high ceiling as a lineman once he adds some strength. Senior Highlights
Southern Illinois
Jacob Poetzl (Marinette/Ellsworth Community College) DE. 6’4, 250 lbs. According to the Southern Illinois website on the 2020 recruiting class, Southern Illinois’ head coach Nick Hill said about Poetzl: “He’s from Wisconsin, up north from Green Bay — just a tough, Wisconsin kid, a worker. He’s the all-time leading (basketball) scorer at his high school. He’s a lot like Zach (Gibson) and myself — you’re playing AAU and thinking about basketball, you start to grow and put on some size, and you’re a Division I football player. He had some opportunities last year to walk on to some Power 5 schools but decided to go to Ellsworth and see what was out there. Can’t say enough good things about him and his family — the toughness he’s going to bring, the work ethic. We had to get him out of the gym from working out to go sign his NLI.” As a prep Poetzl was a First Team All-State pick as well as a 2x First Team All-Conference selection. Also a 4x All-Conference basketball player that is the all-time leading basketball scorer in school history with 1,613 points. At Ellsworth Community College he was a NJCAA All-Ameican HM pick and a First Team All-Conference selection after leading the team with 9.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles. Western Illinois University
Dylan Runkel (Burlington) TE. 6’6, 225 lbs. Powerful TE who played some Wideout at Burlington, Runkel is fast and shifty for his size and shows some nuanced route running abilities and has some tremendous hands. Shows good body control and can high point the football well. Goes full throttle to get the football and has no problem sacrificing his body to make the play. Is going to a complete weapon in the passing game at WIU. Has no problem going over the middle, catching the ball through contact, and uses his frame well to box out defenders to get to the football. Senior highlights
University of North Dakota
Andrew Fenton (Menomonie) OL. 6’3, 275 lbs. Started two seasons on the OL and earned First Team All-Region and All-State honors as a senior. Helped Menomonie win the conference title and reach the state semifinals as a senior. On the wrestling mat he finished sixth in the state and was a first team all-state as a junior. Only has game highlights on his Hudl and not that many at that. vs. Eau Claire Memorial Level III playoffs
Dylan Boecker (Menomonie) LB. 6’3, 200 lbs Accepted a PWO to go to UND. Earned All-Conference honors as a junior at receiver and as a senior at LBr/DE. Named to the All-Region and All-Northwest teams in Wisconsin and helped his team claim two conference titles and reach the state quarterfinals and semifinals. Shows a strong ability to rush the passer and tackle in space and is impressive at getting off blocks and getting to the football. Hard to move at the point of contact and locates the football when tackling. Very strong tackler who keeps his feet pumping once he makes contact. High energy defender with a great motor. Senior Highlights
Easton Kilty (Stratford) OL. 6’6, 280 lbs. First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Region lineman who helped lead Stratford to the state title game as a senior. Moves great out in space and is a pancake machine. Comes out of his stance low and is the best offensive lineman at pass-pro that I’ve seen for this article. Good footwork and patience to engage, and when he does throw the hands he throws them hard and with some pop. Senior Year Highlights
Devon Krzanowski (Fond du Lac/St. Cloud State) With the dismantling of St. Cloud State’s NSIC DII football program this past year, UND picked up some studs needing a new home and the best of them was 2019 All-NSIC Second Team LB Devon Krzanowski. At SCSU he appeared in 21 games for the Huskies and recorded 48 tackles (25 solo, 23 assists) during his first season, five of which were for loss, and forced one fumble. As a sophomore in 2019 he led St. Cloud in tackles (72) and solo stops (53) and also recorded 9.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and one interception. I’m very excited to see how his game translates to the FCS level. Year 2 Highlights Year 1 Highlights
