The New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) has officially shifted the 2020 high school football season to the spring, and all summer workouts for fall sports have been halted, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, we’re plowing ahead with our coverage.
Today we look at the top five running backs in Class 6A:
[player_tooltip player_id="26162" first="Jeston" last="Webskowski"], Clovis: His highlight video is loaded with eye-opening plays, long, powerful runs, acrobatic catches, elusiveness, speed and whatever else you look for in an elite running back. He already has offers from FCS schools Northern Arizona, Abilene Christian and Montana, while New Mexico and several Power 5 schools have expressed interest. He rushed for 1,713 yards, caught 35 passes for 516 yards and scored 31 touchdowns in 2019. Clovis is a legitimate Class 6A title contender and Webskowski is a major reason why.
[player_tooltip player_id="26227" first="Zach" last="Vigil"], Rio Rancho: Who’s the top 2022 running back in New Mexico? It’s Vigil. He rushed for 1,253 yards and 18 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2019, helping Rio Rancho reach the Class 6A championship game. He had 242 total carries, an average of 18.6 per game. Could the Rams rely on Vigil even more this season to the tune of 22-25 carries per game? Don’t bet against it. After all, when you have a horse like Vigil, you ride ‘em as much as you can.
[player_tooltip player_id="26178" first="Tyler" last="Jensen"], Cleveland: The Storm were already locked and loaded at quarterback and wide receiver for the 2020 season when Jensen shook the New Mexico high school football world with his announcement that he was transferring from La Cueva to Cleveland, effectively becoming Dorian Lewis’ successor at RB. Few players have overcome more adversity over the last year or so than Jensen, who beat cancer and then a leg injury to play five games for the Bears in 2019.
[player_tooltip player_id="26180" first="Mando" last="Villescas"], Las Cruces: The top Bulldawg on the ground for Las Cruces last season was Johnny Terrazas, who ran for 1,344 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior in 2019. Making the most of his limited opportunities was the speedy Villescas, who averaged an impressive 10.6 yards per carry on the season and burst onto the scene in a Week 2 win over Eldorado when he rushed for 208 yards and two scores. Now it’s Villescas’ turn at one of the most scrutinized jobs in southern New Mexico – No. 1 RB for Las Cruces.
[player_tooltip player_id="26200" first="Silas" last="Carter"], Centennial: A strong, tough runner with good speed, Carter will be relied on heavily by the Hawks as they try to keep the momentum going (21 wins in last two season) in their quest to reach the top of the Class 6A ladder. He spent most of the 2019 season on the junior varsity squad after transferring and got limited snaps with the varsity in the final four games when he allowed Gabriel Acosta to get some much-needed rest late in the season. Expect Carter to blossom this season for Centennial as they seek to replace numerous senior starters from last season.
