Part of the offensive barrage of quick touchdowns came courtesy of senior athlete Kase Baker.
Baker, a two-way starter for the Gaels, recorded 137 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns.
“We really made some good plays on both sides of the ball,” Baker said. “Everyone was focused and everything fell into place.”
Baker recorded 53 yards rushing as part of a 332-yard performance on the ground for the Gaels. He also caught two passes for 84 yards from fellow senior quarterback Drew Schaeffer.
Late in the second, Baker broke loose for a 10-yard TD run for St. Edmond. As part of a three-touchdown third, he caught 37 and 47 yard strikes from Schaeffer that sent him untouched to paydirt.
“It was a great feeling being on the field with my teammates and having a big crowd to support us,” he said. “I hope we can play the entire season out, but we will just have to see what happens.”
The Gaels now prepare to face Clarion-Goldfield/Dows this Friday night at home inside Dodger Stadium.
“After that big win, everyone is carrying so much momentum,” Baker said. “It was a great way to start the year. Everyone got into the game and everyone played their hearts out.
“That’s what St. Edmond football is all about.”
Baker, who is undecided on his future, is coming off a junior campaign that saw him catch 22 passes for a team-high 290 yards with three scores. He also ran for 476 yards and scored five touchdowns.
