For St. Edmond senior prospect Brock Stanek, it marks a time to strap up the pads and get into live game action with his classmates and teammates.
“Everyone is for everyone else,” Stanek said. “I am extremely excited and ready for this season with my teammates. Our motto is ‘Team Over Self.’
“I am honored to have my last go-round with each and every senior on our team. I am beyond thankful for them as I can’t do much by myself. But with them, we can work wonders on the field.”
Stanek, an all-district defensive lineman a year ago, checks in at 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds. He finished his junior season with 33 tackles including seven for loss and three sacks.
He has received nine offers to continue his career at the next level including a recent one from Missouri Western State.
“We had a great preseason in preparation for our first game,” Stanek said. “We really got after it and are continuing to do so. As a team, we are beyond motivated and excited for this season.”
The Gaels are coached by Matt Dillon, who enters his third season. Dillon previously led West Des Moines Dowling to back-to-back state championships.
“Coach Dillon really is a visionary for this team,” Stanek said. “He motivates us each and every practice to be better and see the future of what Gael football can be this year. I can’t thank him enough for realizing my potential and for the coaching through football and life in general.”
St. Edmond features a deep senior class that includes skill positions players Drew Schaeffer, Parker Oswald, Kase Baker and Sean Flattery. Schaeffer threw for over 700 yards with seven TDs last year.
Baker and Flattery ran for nearly 1,000 combined yards and 11 touchdowns, with Oswald catching 23 passes for almost 300 yards and a pair of scores.
“We have very disciplined and fast senior returning skill players,” Stanek said. “Parker is going to have a huge season. Coach was very impressed with him and I certainly am as well.”
