The state put the week into place several years ago, titling in Week 0 to avoid any confusion with the start for most programs during Week 1. Kind of like the NCAA Tournament when they added the First Four and called it the first round, confusing just about everybody.
West Delaware Rolls Past Anamosa
If there was any doubt about West Delaware in 2020, those were quickly put to bed.
Jared Voss racked up five total touchdowns as the Hawks earned a 66-0 victory over Anamosa.
Voss was 8-for-12 passing for 139 yards and two scores, sporting a 164.0 quarterback rating. He also took off seven times for 118 yards and three TDs on the ground, running the read option to perfection.
As a team, West Delaware had 39 carries for 381 yards with seven touchdowns, averaging just under 10 yards per carry. Wyatt Voelker had 88 yards, Will Halverson 74 and Jadyn Peyton scored twice.
Kyle Cole was the big-play threat in the passing game, catching four passes for 105 yards and a score. Kyle Kelley also had a receiving touchdowns.
Voss also had a 47-yard punt for his lone attempt of the night.

Cardinal’s Maddux Jones Maddux Jones 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB Cardinal | 2022 IA is in for a big season.
Jones recorded eight total touchdowns as the Comets scored a convincing 62-26 victory over Columbus. Cardinal led 36-7 at the half and never looked back.
Jones was 15 of 16 passing for 332 yards and five touchdowns, adding 145 yards and three scores on 13 carries with his legs. He had 268.1 quarterback rating, averaging over 22 yards per completion and 11.2 yards per carry.
Griffin Greiner Griffin Greiner 6'1" | 180 lbs | WR Cardinal | 2022 State IA was his favorite target on the night, catching six passes for 147 yards with two touchdowns. Three other players caught TD passes as Blaine Bryant had four catches for 94 yards.
Columbus’ Jeff Hoback tried his best to keep up with Jones, throwing for 123 yards including a TD to Triston Miller. Will Schwab ran for 102 yards, as well.
Southwest Valley Outlasts Nodaway Valley
In the third and final game of the week, Southwest Valley claimed a 22-15 victory over Nodaway Valley.
Brendan Knapp led Southwest Valley with 171 yards rushing while also completing 5 of 10 passes for 69 yards. Knapp’s TD pass to Isaac Currin was the deciding factor giving the Timberwolves the victory.
