The Gaels raced out to a quick lead on Eagle Grove only to see the home-standing Eagles rally back and take the lead themselves.
After falling behind 16-14, though, it was all St. Edmond, as they cruised to a commanding 61-16 victory.
Six Different Gaels Scored
St. Edmond racked up nearly 500 yards of total offense on the night, including over 300 on the ground. Junior Tyler Rossmanith ran for 148 yards including a 70-yard TD run, while Sean Flattery finished with 91 yards and two scores.
Kase Baker, Anthony Lacina and Caleb Schaeffer all got into the end zone on the ground, with Baker adding two receiving scores.
Quinten McCarville caught a touchdown pass from senior quarterback Drew Schaeffer, who threw for 162 yards and averaged over 32 yards per completion.
Defense Comes Up Big In The Second Half
The Gael defense picked off three passes and recovered two fumbles. Parker Oswald, a standout at wide receiver, made two of those interceptions with Anthony Lacina adding one himself. Cayne Reed and Peyton Scott recovered fumbles.
After allowing the Eagle Grove offense to find some success in the first half, St. Edmond under new defensive coordinator Mark McDermott put the clamps down over the final 24 minutes.
The Eagles failed to find the end zone and struggled to convert on third-down.
Bright Future For Eagle Grove
Much like the Gaels a couple years ago, the Eagles were working under the guidance of first-year head coach Logan Willard. Just a handful of players on the roster are seniors, and many underclassmen – including freshmen – found themselves in key roles during Week 1.
Jakob Jeske, one of those ninth-graders, ran the option offense with success early on. He finished with a team-high 86 yards rushing including two touchdowns. Jeske also threw for 50 yards.
All seven players who received a rushing attempt were underclassmen including junior Roberto Calles and sophomore Tate Richardson. Calles successfully ran in both conversion attempts.
