With that said, we are going to take a look at the top skill position players from as many districts as possible in the state before fall camps begin.
Some of these players are already receiving college interest, while others are looking to catch the eye of that right coach.
Brady Sohn – Harris-Lake Park
Not many defenses could figure out how to slow Brady Sohn down last year.
The Harris-Lake Park Class of 2021 quarterback threw for 2,166 yards with 34 touchdowns, completing 129 of 199. He averaged almost 17 yards per completion, was picked off just nine times and had a rating of 156.2.
On the ground, Sohn ran for 349 yards and scored four more times. He also made 28 tackles on defense with a couple of forced turnovers.
The Wolves went 8-2, advancing to the state playoffs. They scored over 35 points in six games.
Gabe Sievers – Newell-Fonda
A talented multi-sport standout for Newell-Fonda, Gabe Sievers was efficient last year at the quarterback position.
Sievers completed 32 of 51 passes for 511 yards with 11 touchdowns and just one interception, sporting a quarterback rating of just under 147. He also ran 40 times for 229 yards, scoring five times.
During a four-game win streak last year, the Mustangs scored over 32 points in all four games. They started the year 5-1 before finishing 6-3.
Tyler Towne – River Valley
Tyler Towne had a big season at wide receiver for River Valley last year.
Towne hauled in 32 passes for 667 yards with 14 touchdowns, all numbers that led the team. He averaged almost 21 yards per catch.
On defense, 42 of Towne’s 44 tackles were solo stops as he also picked off an eye-popping eight passes and recovered two fumbles.
Blaine Harpenau – Remsen St. Mary’s
What will Blaine Harpenau do for an encore as quarterback at Remsen St. Mary’s? We shall find out.
As a junior, Harpeanu racked up 1,447 yards passing by completing 90 of 144 attempts. He threw for 26 touchdowns and ran in another 24, adding 837 yards on the ground.
The Hawks topped both East Mills and Fremont-Mills to reach the state semifinals before falling to Audubon, 39-28. They scored over 50 points in seven consecutive games before a forfeit over Siouxland Christian.
Jeremy Koenck – Remsen St. Mary’s
The running piece to the Remsen St. Mary’s offense last year was Jeremy Koenck.
And unfortunately for opposing defensive coaches, Koenck returns.
As a junior, Koenck racked up 1,098 yards and 14 touchdowns, averaging eight yards per carry. He also hauled in 10 passes for another 59 yards while making 50.5 tackles on defense.
Koenck forced five turnovers and averaged 24.5 yards per kickoff return.
Cole Thilges – West Bend-Mallard
You have to have a quarterback that can both throw the football and run with it. West Bend-Mallard has just that in Cole Thilges.
The Class of 2021 athlete racked up 991 yards passing and 729 yards rushing last year. He threw for 11 touchdowns and ran for 15 more to lead the Wolverines.
Thilges was also key on two-point conversions, recording eight of them.
Jared Schmidt – West Bend-Mallard
West Bend-Mallard has some nice offensive weapons around quarterback Cole Thilges, including classmate Jared Schmidt.
