With that said, we are going to take a look at the top skill position players from as many districts as possible in the state before fall camps begin.
Some of these players are already receiving college interest, while others are looking to catch the eye of that right coach.
Owen Thomas – Aplington-Parkersburg
The name Thomas carries so much with it at Aplington-Parkersburg. And Class of 2021’s Owen Thomas had no trouble holding up the legacy last year.
Thomas completed 82 of 177 passes for 1,262 yards with 11 touchdowns for the Falcons, who went 5-4 overall.
He had some key games including an 8-for-11, 241-yard, 3-TD performance in a road win at North Butler.
Drew Larson – Dike-New Hartford
If you look at the numbers from last year, Drew Larson would appear to be the next man in at the No. 1 running back position for Dike-New Hartford.
The Wolverines lost Cade Bennett to graduation, taking with him his 1,677 yards and 22 touchdowns. Larson, though, had 51 carries for 318 yards and three scores a year ago.
Along with a handful of others, he will likely be tasked with trying to pick up some of that production.
Samuel Bandstra – East Marshall
For East Marshall to improve upon its 1-8 record from a year ago, they will need a big senior season out of Samuel Bandstra.
Bandstra supplied much of the offense last year, rushing for a team-high 408 yards with six touchdowns. He averaged just under four yards per carry.
On defense, Bandstra was all over the gridiron, recording 88.5 tackles including 74 solo stops with two forced turnovers.
Trevor Thompson – South Hamilton
The bulk of the 2,319 rushing yards produced by South Hamilton are gone with the graduation of Cade Flaugh.
But the Hawks have an experienced back returning in Class of 2021’s Trevor Thompson, who ran for 540 yards on 90 carries with nine touchdowns.
Look for Thompson to help pick up some of the production from Flaugh, who had 1,165 yards and 16 scores. He also made 42 tackles on defense.
Beau Butler – South Hardin
It didn’t matter to Beau Butler who was under center last year, as the South Hardin receiver just made plays.
Butler, a Class of 2021 prospect, caught a team-high 42 passes for 709 yards with eight touchdowns. He averaged just under 17 yards per reception, and will be counted on for much of the same this season.
Butler also added a rushing touchdown and made 40 tackles with three for loss and two sacks on defense. He averaged almost 18 yards on six kickoff returns, as well.
