With that said, we are going to take a look at the top skill position players from as many districts as possible in the state before fall camps begin.
Some of these players are already receiving college interest, while others are looking to catch the eye of that right coach.
Jordan Meyer – Belmond-Klemme
Belmond-Klemme will need someone to step up on offense after the graduation of Jaace Weidemann, who ran for almost 1,700 yards last year.
Thankfully for the Broncos, they return quarterback Jordan Meyer.
Meyer threw for 865 yards with seven touchdowns, adding another 244 yards and six scores on the ground. He averaged over 14 yards per completion and also posted 27 yards per punt attempt.
Mateo Martinez – Clarion-Goldfield/Dows
If there was one person you had to key on when playing Clarion-Goldfield/Dows it was Class of 2021 prospect Mateo Martinez.
But defenses still had trouble stopping him.
Martinez caught a team-high 19 passes for 324 yards with five touchdowns last year, averaging over 17 yards per catch. He also made 21 tackles, averaged 15 yards per kickoff return and 10 yards on punt returns.
Nick Huntley – Eagle Grove
Not much went right for Eagle Grove last year, but Nick Huntley was a bright spot.
Huntley, a Class of 2021 player, caught 13 passes for 267 yards and a score, and will likely be needed for more this coming fall. The Eagles do also return quarterback Jake Darland.
On defense, Huntley was in on 40 tackles with 25 being solo stops. He also recovered two fumbles and posted averages of 18.5 on kickoff returns and eight yards on punt returns.
Trey Oehlertz – Pocahontas Area
Pocahontas Area has quite the threat at quarterback in Trey Oehlertz.
The Class of 2021 prospect threw for 1,058 yards with seven touchdowns while also rushing for 622 yards and eight scores. He completed 81 of 159, averaging 13 yards per completion with a quarterback rating of almost 107.
On defense, Oehlertz made 31.5 tackles.
Luke Crosgrove – Pocahontas Area
The nice thing for Trey Oehlertz as he enters his final season with Pocahontas Area at quarterback is that he will have his leading target back in classmate Luke Crosgrove.
Crosgrove had 33 receptions for 475 yards with four touchdowns as a junior, averaging 14.4 yards per catch.
He was also a standout on defense, making 70.5 tackles with 56 being solo stops and forcing two turnovers.
Cole Corey – South Central Calhoun
The man that pushes the buttons on offense for state contender South Central Calhoun is Class of 2021 quarterback Cole Corey.
Last year, Corey completed 57 of 102 passes for 887 yards with seven touchdowns. He averaged almost 16 yards per completion for a quarterback rating of just under 129.
Corey also had 193 yards rushing and six scores.
Brennan Holder – South Central Calhoun
A talented basketball player as well, Brennan Holder will try to kick-start his final season with South Central Calhoun by excelling on the football field.
Holder ran for 312 yards with five touchdowns a year ago, averaging just over 11 yards – yes, ELEVEN – per attempt. He was part of a Titan unit that ran for 2,994 yards and scored 48 times on the ground.
In the air, Holder caught four passes for 59 yards, numbers that could grow after the graduation of the leading receivers. He also made 61.5 tackles including nine for loss and five sacks on defense with an interception.
