During the 2019 season, Marietta High School found itself on top of the football world in Georgia, defeating Lowndes 17-9 in the state championship. Headed into this new season, we can all expect Marietta to be just as competitive, with the desire to prove that they can repeat as state championships. Whether they can manage to pull off such a task will be fun to watch. Very talented, and well coached teams like Lowndes, and Norcross will be training all off-season to end those dreams, with a chance to hoist the trophy themselves.
Powerhouse high schools such as Norcross, McEachern, and Archer, who all fell short in the early rounds of the playoffs, will also be hoping to make a run as well. Power 5 players for each of these schools will hope to be able to prove their ability one last time in the playoffs, and even potentially receive more attention from potential college programs. With rosters as talented as each of these teams, anything can be possible.
Even more talented schools such as Camden County, Grayson, and Colquitt, will also be looking to edge their competition this year as well. With the talent to compete with almost any team in the state, if they play disciplined, and to their ability, they have as good of a chance as anybody. The big question for some of these schools though is if they will be able to make a run despite having lost key players that were seniors last season.
Lastly, we personally would love to see some of the talented teams such as Parkview, and Westlake find a way to make a run in the playoffs. While these are very talent rich teams, they always seem to fall short as well. Within each of these teams, there are great returning players, but what makes them exciting to watch, is the opportunity for young talent to step up to the plate. Either way, seeing what they are able to accomplish in the 2020 season will be something worth watching.
Regardless of how the 2020 football season shapes up for the 7A class, we can guarantee that there will be great football to watch during the playoffs. When there are as many consistently talented schools within the state as there is, it is always interesting to see who will rise to the plate, who will fall short, and who will take a step back from the season before. As the season is about to begin, look out for some of these teams we mentioned, and see if they have what it takes to eventually make a run in the playoffs. We’ll be keeping an eye on them as well.
