The game of football is notorious for its tall, and large players. In high school, players are often times not only recruited for their athletic ability, but for their size, and their frame. In the modern era of the game, measurables have become extremely important to certain college programs. Camps, combines, and even unofficial visits are often times in which height, and weight can be taken. While some athletes are blessed with the physique, height, and weight, others unfortunately do not. Sometimes, these smaller/shorter players have the full package, but they may not be as tall as some would like. Here, we will explore 5 of the top players in the 2022 class that are under 6’0.
[player_tooltip player_id="33865" first="Deyon" last="Bouie"] DB/WR- 5’11 165 Bainbridge
Playing a position that favors a bit of a taller and longer individual, Devon Bouie measures in at 5’11, just missing the 6’0 mark. Bouie is one of the top rated recruits in the state of GA. His ability to play both sides of the ball can be seen to be very attractive to college coaches. While he makes great plays on offense as a dominant receiver, his projection into the college level will be as a DB. For his size and height, he is able to dominate on defense, using his burst and speed to make plays. He uses his hands to be physical in coverage, and also plays in an instinctive way. His speed and ability to have good vision on the football field allows him to have good ball skills and create turnovers. With this, he is very fluid in his movements as it is shown in how he flips his hips and sinks and bends. Look for Bouie to overcome his height differential as he goes on to college in a few years to become a playmaker there as well.
[player_tooltip player_id="33870" first="Jamie" last="Felix"] RB- 5’10 205 Camden
Despite only standing at 5’10, [player_tooltip player_id="33870" first="Jamie" last="Felix"] is a force at RB. It is no surprise that SEC teams have taken a liking to Felix’s running ability. While Felix may be a bit shorter, he is a powerful, and strong runner. Felix runs behind his pads in an upright style, and is not afraid to lower his shoulder on contact. Due to this, he is able to run through tackles. Most impressively, he is able to turn the corner at a very high level for his age, and his above average speed and burst on a football field make it hard for defenders to bring him down. Felix is a perfect example of a RB who maximizes his talent in comparison to his height. Felix will continue to receive Power 5 offers as a Junior.
[player_tooltip player_id="33872" first="Antonio" last="Martin"] RB- 5’10 195 Langston Hughes
[player_tooltip player_id="33872" first="Antonio" last="Martin"] is an underrated prospect in his class, and he displays a bit of a different running style than [player_tooltip player_id="33870" first="Jamie" last="Felix"]. Martin is a shorter RB with a quick twitch and good feet. He is very quick and shifty as he runs, and is able to efficiently dip his shoulder when running in between the tackles. Martin is not the kind of RB to run you over, rather, he is the kind of RB that has great vision and straight line speed. This helps him to score multiple touchdowns, while also gaining a lot of yards. His patience at times when he is running can be seen to be a strength, so expect Martin to receive more attention during his Junior season.
[player_tooltip player_id="33887" first="Tajh" last="Sanders"] WR- 5’11 180 Valdosta
If you cut on the tape of [player_tooltip player_id="33887" first="Tajh" last="Sanders"], you would not be surprised with the attention he is already getting as a 2022. Sanders is a smooth athlete, with fluid movement. He already has the ability to get in and out of his breaks cleanly and consistently- which is very impressive for his age. His limited false steps and wasted movement is a plus to his game, thus allowing his speed and burst to be unhindered. With this, Sanders’ tracks the football very well, catches it cleanly, and uses his hands. His route running ability is already a difference maker, and he will continue to impress as he goes into his sophomore year. Regardless of his height, Sanders is a can’t miss talent that will translate wherever he decides to play college football.
[player_tooltip player_id="33907" first="Deandre" last="Creary"] DB- 5’11 174 Kell
[player_tooltip player_id="33907" first="Deandre" last="Creary"] can be seen as another gem within the 2022 class at this stage of the recruiting game. Creary may not be getting much attention, but what he can do on the football field despite his height, it eye opening. While Creary is 5’11, his length and frame are ideal for his position. Specifically, his length assists him in coverage and helps him make up for misplacement of his body, or a misstep when he is playing man to man coverage. With this, Creary already uses his hands effectively against receivers, and his solid footwork assists his athletic movement skills. Creary is a playmaker, and he constantly breaks up passes, and causes turnovers. His Junior season will show what interest he can draw as he continues to develop in size, and technique.
