For these five signal-callers, that was definitely not the case.
With a year under their belts at leading the unit, you can bet they are expecting even bigger things in the coming fall.
Here’s a look at five of the top Class of 2022 quarterbacks in Iowa:
Eddie Burgess – Montezuma
It can be difficult to compare athletes at the 8-player level to others, but Montezuma’s Eddie Burgess is someone who would excel regardless the class-size.
Burgess, also a standout for the basketball team, finished last year with 2,914 yards passing and 49 touchdowns. He had just seven interceptions among his 281 passes, earning a quarterback rating of 145.1.
Montezuma scored over 50 points seven times, including 82 in a win over English Valleys. Burgess finished that game 19-for-26 for 353 yards with seven passing touchdowns to go with 131 yards and four rushing TDs on the ground.
The Braves should be one of the more explosive offenses in the state with Burgess, Trey Shearer and Cole Watts all returning.
Nathan Russell – Nodaway Valley
Not may teams at the Class A level could handle the passing attack of Nodaway Valley and sophomore quarterback Nathan Russell.
Russell passed for 1,886 yards with 20 touchdowns, completing 140 of his 283 attempts.
The Wolverines won three of their first five games to begin the season, but struggled down the stretch. That experience, though, along with the return of Russell, Tony Ayase, Caelen Devault and Jon Gebbie should give hope for the coming fall.
