Over the years, the quarterback position in Iowa has evolved into more of a dual-threat that can hurt you with both his legs and his arm.
Being smart with the football is still important, but taking those chances and making the play that can win you the game is just as key.
As we begin preparing for the upcoming season, here is a look at five Class of 2021 quarterbacks set for big years.
[player_tooltip player_id="23817" first="Cooper" last="DeJean"] - OABCIG
An early commit to the University of Iowa, [player_tooltip player_id="23817" first="Cooper" last="DeJean"] from OABCIG had a season for the ages last year.
DeJean led the Falcons to an undefeated regular season, dominating straight through to the UNI-Dome. From there, they scored 78 points in two games, handling Algona and Waukon losses.
With plenty of talent surrounding him on the field, DeJean was still the best of the bunch each time he laced his shoes up. He finished the year with 3,546 yards and 42 passing touchdowns for a 134.8 rating, adding 1,292 yards and 24 more scores on the ground.
For those not wanting to do the math, that is 4,838 yards of offense and 66 touchdowns. He also recorded 34 tackles, picked off five passes with two of those returned for scores and had two punt returns for touchdowns.
All in all, DeJean made a name for himself on the field and the Hawkeyes took note. With his college decision complete, expect another record-breaking season from the OABCIG standout athlete this fall.
[player_tooltip player_id="23933" first="Jacob" last="Herold"] - South Winneshiek
The second-leading returning passer in the state is South Winneshiek’s [player_tooltip player_id="23933" first="Jacob" last="Herold"].
Herold completed 174 of 285 passes for 2,562 yards with a 21-to-8 touchdown-to-interception ratio. His quarterback rating finished at 136.6 for the season.
The Warriors went 7-3 overall, advancing to the state playoffs before falling to MFL-Mar-Mac. Herold flashed his own abilities with six rushing touchdowns on the season.
Following his strong junior campaign and experience in leading South Winneshiek to the postseason, look out for even more from Herold in 2020. He already holds an offer from Simpson College and was invited to the Hawaii Tiki Bowl.
[player_tooltip player_id="23835" first="Ashton" last="Cook"] - Iowa City Regina
The name Cook is synonymous with Iowa City Regina, as [player_tooltip player_id="23835" first="Ashton" last="Cook"] is following in the footsteps of brother Drew and playing under legendary Iowa Hawkeye and former NFL player Marv Cook.
As the starting quarterback for the Regals a year ago, Cook completed 198 of 345 passes for 2,446 yards with 25 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. The Regals reached the state semifinals, going 9-3 behind Cook.
Cook also averaged almost four yards per carry and tied for the team lead with eight rushing scores.
In April, he received an offer from Eastern Michigan and also holds offers from schools such as Northern Iowa and South Dakota.
[player_tooltip player_id="23828" first="Jase" last="Bauer"] - Ankeny
An all-state baseball player, Ankeny’s [player_tooltip player_id="23828" first="Jase" last="Bauer"] has plenty of options for his future.
Bauer, who plays alongside University of Iowa commit [player_tooltip player_id="23810" first="Brody" last="Brecht"], threw for 2,207 yards, ran for another 369 and recorded 26 combined touchdowns last year in helping the Hawks reach the state quarterfinals.
He completed 61 percent of his passes, throwing just six interceptions among his 205 attempts. Bauer also showed his abilities by averaging nearly 43 yards per punt to lead Ankeny.
Bauer has already received plenty of interest from the FCS level of football.
[player_tooltip player_id="23831" first="Marcus" last="Morgan"] - Iowa City West
Another football and baseball standout, Iowa City West’s [player_tooltip player_id="23831" first="Marcus" last="Morgan"] continues to improve as a field general.
Morgan, who recently received an offer from Central Michigan, threw for 1,723 yards with 11 touchdowns last year for the Trojans. He also finished with 143 yards rushing and a pair of scores, adding a receiving touchdown and averaging almost 38 yards per punt to his stats.
Along with Central Michigan, Northern Iowa, Dartmouth have shown interest in Morgan to play football, while Iowa offered him a full scholarship to continue as a baseball player.
