Stanek is a two-way starter for the Gaels along the offensive and defensive line. Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing over 240 pounds, he continues to fill out and grow into his frame.
Last year, Stanek recorded 33 tackles with 24 solo stops, seven tackles for loss and two sacks on defense earning all-district honors. He also helped pave the way for nearly 2,000 yards of total offense and 18 touchdowns.
“USF has great facilities and the coaches there are very supportive and professional,” Stanek said. “I talked with Coach (Hayden) Mace, the offensive line coach, and Coach (Luke) Olson, the defensive line coach. Both are great guys and did a great job telling me about the program and showing me around. Coach Mace told me they see me more as an offensive tackle than a defensive end.
“We went and toured the locker room and weight room in between rains. Then headed to the campus where Coach Olson and Coach *Brock) Larsen showed my dad and I around. After that, the head coach, Jon Anderson, took us into a meeting room where we had a great discussion and I received a scholarship offer to play there. Then we wrapped up our campus tour and met up with Coach Mace.”
After the visit, Stanek competed in a combine event after receiving an invitation from a coach at the University of North Dakota.
“The combine itself went really well. I tested with the offensive line and did very well,” he said. “I had the fastest 40, pro agility and highest vertical jump of any offensive lineman there. I did drills with the defensive line and those guys were some good athletes.
“A lot of them were really light but among the guys that were around my size I tore it up. Overall it was good work and it pushed me in the right way. I also picked up some better technique because of it.”
For now, Stanek plans to head to camps hosted by Minnesota-Duluth and Morningside. He also has been extended an invitation to tour the Minnesota-Duluth camps while looking further into USF, Concordia-St. Paul, Augustana University and Morningside.
