Cherwin is a smaller back with breakaway speed, who consistently pulled away from defenders last fall. He lined up as the dive back in South Elgin’s triple-option offense and showed his vision and downhill running ability. He has a very strong lower half and rarely gets tackled by the first defender. Cherwin has elite cutting ability and can stop and start like an FBS level back. They were able to create matchup issues in the slot and get him receptions on downfield vertical concepts. At free-safety, he knows how to read the quarterback and will attack the football once it’s in the air. He showed versatility being able to move to the outside and play cornerback. His feet are exceedingly quick in press coverage, where he also displayed the ability to use his off-hand jam. Overall, I believe Cherwin has a bright future at running back at the collegiate level. He has the ability to play slot if need be and I wouldn’t be surprised if colleges put packages in for him to split out wide. To me, he’s at the very least an FCS level talent and could make a push for an even higher level.
In-Depth
How have you been preparing during COVID-19?
“I have a little weight set in my garage that I use at least 3 times a week and I have also recently started crossfit with my older sister. Also, me and a couple of my guys go to a nearby field and get some work done once or twice a week.”
How did last season go for you individually?
“Last season was the best season individually for me thus far. I really fell in love with running back and safety. I averaged 24 yards per carry at running back and I had over 500+ rushing yards and 200+ receiving and multiple interceptions on defense.”
How did Last Season go for your team?
“Our team did fantastic last year. We were conference champs and we made it to the second round of the playoffs for the second time in school history! Also, we were one of the last teams to give up a single touchdown on defense last year, so I’d say we were pretty successful.”
What are you most looking forward to for the 2020 season?
“I’m looking forward to putting in the work with my teammates and coaches and being the senior leader that the younger guys can look up to and follow in my footsteps. I’m also excited to take the next step in my career and play college ball and get a fantastic education.”
What goals do you have for the 2020 season?
“My goals for the 2020 season is to get all-conference, all-area, and all-state. Also, I’m trying to lead my team to the second round of the playoffs and even further.”
What are your biggest strengths?
“My biggest strengths are even though I’m only 5’9, I’m pretty big. I’m 185, and I run a 4.5 40 yard dash time and lastly, I can play both sides of the field at multiple different positions. Also, I’m very smart on the field and can analyze the defense and offense. I can interpret where the defense is going to go or where the ball is going to be thrown on offense.”
What do you think you can improve on?
“I think I can improve on my footwork and route running. Even though I’m primarily a running back, I can still play receiver, but I feel that my routes and footwork need to be crisper.”
How’s your team looking for 2020?
“Our team is looking great, most of our starting offense from last year is returning and all of our starting offensive linemen are coming back as well. We are losing most of our defense, but we have some great younger guys coming up to fill those roles, so I’m not worried.”
Is there any of your teammates we should watch for?
“Ben Karpowicz our quarterback, he’s on the rise. Alex Noworol he’s our starting slot and corner, Michael Roath is one of our best and most hard-working offensive linemen. Anthony Robert’s is an upcoming junior DB with lots of physicality.”
What schools are currently recruiting you?
“I have been talking to Grand Valley State, Concordia St.Paul, South Dakota State, University of Sioux Falls, Indiana Wesleyan, Northern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University, and Davidson university.”
Do you have any offers?
“Yes, From Grand Valley State University and Concordia St.Paul.”
Do you have a dream school?
“My dream school has always been the University of Oregon.”
Have you taken any visits?
“I have visited Northern Illinois University and South Dakota State so far because of COVID-19.”
When are you looking to make a decision?
“I’m looking to make a decision based by winter 2020, with the hopes that we have a season in Illinois.”
What’s something interesting we should know about you?
“At a young age, I was adopted by my wonderful family right now and I work so hard because of them, and I pray that one day I can repay them back for all of the blessings that they have given me in my life.”
