The town of around 1,250 that combines with nearby Spicer, is home to one of the toughest 3A Minnesota schools that has produced former Minnesota Vikings and now Carolina Panther WR Brandon Zylstra, his younger brother Shane who is the best receiver in D2 at Mankato State, South Dakota State FB Payton Madison, and a host of other grinders that make their small towns proud every Friday under the Minnesota lights. Having just recently joined the list of accomplished Wildcats is now senior Ethan Haugen.
Haugen with the huge snag. The two-sport athlete (football and baseball) at NLS was dangerous in all three phases of the game in 2019 as a receiver and running back, defensive back, punter, and punt and kick returner. Finishing the year with eight tackles, two fumble recoveries, four interceptions, 10 catches for 158 yards and a TD, 22 rushes for 225 yards and two TDs, and six kick returns for 186 yards and a TD with six punt returns for 150 yards and a TD, it is fair to say that Haugen did it all for the Wildcats, and I was excited when I was able to interview him in an exclusive “Recruiting Report” for Northstar Football News. He even had three punts land inside the 10 with 12 punts for 400+ yards overall! Haugen is willing to play at any level, and I hope you enjoy the little bit of insight into this small town baller.
NFN: Hello and thank you for your time, Ethan. Introduce yourself to our readers to begin with and summarize your 2019 with the Wildcats.
Haugen: “I’m Ethan Haugen and I’m from Spicer, Minnesota. I started playing football in 5th grade. I love to hunt and fish, and play baseball. What I love about playing football is being with friends and getting to show my athletic ability. I’m 5’9” 150 lbs. 40 yard: stopwatch 4.5. SQUAT PR 365. BENCH PR 240. Our 2019-2020 season went well. We were 6-4 overall. Some of the highlights from those games were a three touchdown game against Watertown Mayer. A major lowlight was breaking my arm in the second half of our game against Annandale.”
NFN: Awesome. What were your expectations like going into the season and walk us through the 2019 New London-Spicer season a little bit.
Haugen: “Our expectations for this season were to make it very far into the playoffs! That was cut short in the second round against Albany. Playing for New London-Spicer which has been a competitive team in 3A is very fun, the coaches are amazing and we are always playing against good competition. My first five games went very well I had nine touchdowns overall with four being called back for penalties. Our first game we played Milaca.
Haugen at CB.I had a punt return and a kick return for a touchdown with the kick return being called back. Our second game was against St. Cloud Cathedral. In that game I also had a kick return for a touchdown. Our third game was against Watertown Mayer. I scored three touchdowns in this game. Our fourth game was against Dassel-Cokato for HOMECOMING!!! I started the game off with a pick six but that was called back for a penalty. In our 5th game we played Annandale. They are a very good team. I had a touchdown called back in that game aswell. in my 5 games we were 4-1!”
NFN: I’m sorry about the injury. How are you feeling about recruiting? What levels are you open to playing at and what are you looking for in a potential college football team?
Haugen: “I’m interested in any team that is looking for someone special. im looking for a team that truly will want me because i will be willing to buy in. I’m considering all levels and I’ve been contacted by Concordia College-Moorhead!”
