Welbes was a key player as a junior for the unbeaten state champion Golden Eagles in 2024. He led them with 88.0 tackles, 58 of which were of the solo variety, earning first-team all-district honors on defense. He posted 11.0 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks and forced a fumble. Welbes chipped in with 19 carries for 188 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, too. When we pop on his 11th-grade highlight video, we witness him pick up yards out of the wildcat formation. Welbes is an active linebacker that diagnoses what’s coming pre-snap and often is in motion towards where the play is headed. He runs well and can cover, too.
