Byers is a more accomplished wrestler than football player to date, but dismissing a future on the gridiron after high school would be premature. The sophomore flashed potential in his second sport last season. He produced 29.5 tackles, 14 of which were solo stops. A tackle and a half for loss and half of a sack also were on his final ledger. This winter, he stood on the state wrestling podium for a second time in as many tries, the first Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln athlete to accomplish that feat since current ?s=20" rel="nofollow">Lynx coach Adam Manz did so in 2004-05. Byers’ sixth-place finish this winter was two spots better than where he ended up as a freshman. The improvement on the mat could very well translate into another step forward on the field in the fall. That would be saying something since he was a Class 5A all-district pick as a 10th-grader. There’s not much footage to watch on-line. There are a few clips on his Hudl page from his freshman year and ?s=20" rel="nofollow">one from last season on Twitter. They show a broad base of skills on both sides of the ball, speed and athleticism.
