It was probably around this time last year that Putnam City defensive end

became one of the top prospects in the state’s 2023 class. After a breakout junior season, McCoy firmly established himself as one of the top defensive linemen in the class. McCoy built on that breakout junior season with a fantastic offseason and that led to a strong senior campaign as well. Similar to a few other prospects on this breakdown, McCoy was a player that opponents would game plan for and it didn’t matter. He still found a way to be incredibly productive. McCoy was recruited by Power Five programs all over the country but eventually settled on Colorado.

. When it comes to the 2023 prospects in this state, McCoy is very underrated as a defensive end and can absolutely get after the quarterback. McCoy and the Pirates are back into the playoffs after dropping back down to Class 6A-2. Over the last decade, the most success the Pirates have had is when they are in 6A-2. They travel to Sand Springs to face the Sandites in the first round, who have a good running game but a young quarterback. If McCoy can put the pressure on the Sandite freshman, the Pirates could pull off the upset and make it to the next round.

We really try to avoid the word “underrated” when breaking down a prospect but we have to use it again here when we talk about Putnam City’s

. And not only is he underrated, but it’s a mystery as to why. McCoy holds several D1 offers, has been on the radar since the end of last season and has been incredibly productive this season for the Pirates. We think the sky is the limit here for McCoy moving forward because he is just scratching the surface on what he can be as a prospect. He’s not the biggest prospect at the defensive end position but so far after a few seasons against 6A competition, there hasn’t been a single concern about size.
