About Sonny
Expert Analysis
Matt Tate | Prep Redzone Scout
Delpizzo had a season high night against Bear Creek. The 5’7 155-pound scatback had 33 carries for 209 yards with 3 touchdowns. He has very good athletic ability due to very good speed, balance, change of direction, and good acceleration. He has an explosive quick start and uses his very good vision to weave through the defense. Delpizzo prances like a deer, and has explosive jump cuts. Once he gets past the 2nd level, he uses his home run speed and is gone. Very good outside running. Delpizzo thrives on making defenders miss. He isn’t afraid of putting his shoulder down to create contact. I’m excited to see what he can continue to do !

Few players in 4A have been as versatile as Delpizzo. The two-way standout has been a nightmare for defenses, rushing for 951 yards and nine touchdowns while also hauling in 50 receptions for 686 yards and six receiving scores. Delpizzo’s ability to impact both the ground and passing game makes him one of the state’s most complete offensive threats. His vision, balance and reliable hands make him a mismatch weapon from anywhere on the field. College coaches should be taking serious notice, as his playmaking ability consistently changes games. Frederick has leaned on him heavily and he’s delivered week after week, establishing himself as one of the most well rounded athletes in 4A football.

Delpizzo’s compact frame didn’t limit his impact. With 35 catches for 625 yards, he averaged an impressive 17.9 yards per catch. His breakout came against Thornton, where he hauled two passes for 113 yards. His eight touchdowns highlight his big-play potential. As a junior, Delpizzo is poised to return even stronger next season, with the speed and vision to continue being a deep-threat nightmare for defenders.

Sonny had 34 receptions, 464 receiving yards and 4 TDs this past season for the Golden Eagles. He was 3rd on the team in each of these categories, behind two Junior receivers. Sonny has good speed in his release and showed the ability to read defenses, understanding inside and outside leverage, and finding open areas in the field to settle and give the QB a good target. He has very good quickness in and out of breaks and manipulates defenders with a nice mix of head fakes and plant steps to create separation, showing the ability to run a wide variety of routes. Sonny showed good concentration and body control, making an impressive catch along the sideline and keeping his feet in bounds. He displays solid toughness to make catches through contact and fighting through tackles to gain extra yards. Sonny makes nice cuts using very good agility to run after the catch and uses good field vision to find open running lanes. There’s no doubt that Sonny will improve next year, working with the same receiving corps and QB returning for his Junior year.
