It’s rare that a guy plays as both a kicker and kick returner, but that fact is just a microcosm of the unique skill set Rodriguez brings to the table. The rising junior has a big leg and was the state’s top deep threat, statistically speaking. He averaged nearly 40 yards per catch, converting seven of his 14 catches to touchdowns. While his future might end up being as a kicker, we love his upside as a receiver and returner.
One of my colleagues called Ryley the most explosive receiver in the state, so I had to check him out for myself. When you look at his stats, you can definitely see a lot of big catches for major yardage. The film verifies this – he’s a big-time serious threat for Starmount down the field. The first thing you see is his ability to beat single coverage with speed and a good release off the line of scrimmage. Second, he has a good ability to high-point the football against defensive backs, so those things definitely are a plus. As if that wasn’t enough, he’s got a value add as a pretty good kicker, so I think a college would definitely show interest in Ryley.
You’d find it difficult to find a receiver who does more in fewer opportunities than Rodriguez, who has over 350 yards and four touchdowns on just 10 catches for Starmount’s run-heavy offense. He’s impressive defensively as well, with great ball skills and a huge impact on that side of the ball. Add to that kick return and punting/kicking duties, and you’ve got an impressive all-around player.
