I am sure Schmelzer and the rest of the pack of Cougars are probably unsure how to feel about a 42-42 tie this week against Linden; however, the senior quarterback had likely the best game of his career in the contest. On the road, in terrible rainy conditions against the Tigers, Schmelzer went 14/25 for 231 yards. What was truly impressive is that he single-handedly put 6 touchdowns on the board (5 passes, 1 rushing). Without throwing an interception, Schmelzer has now gone 5 games without an interception.

I’m going to start out by saying Montgomery’s Michael Schmelzer Michael Schmelzer 5'11" | 185 lbs | QB Montgomery | 2024 State NJ is a D1 talent. After watching his film thoroughly, it’s pretty obvious schools will be missing out if they don’t reach out to him. This kid can do it all and will transfer extremely well to the next level.
With 24 total touchdowns on the season and 1661 passing yards, Michael was a force to be reckoned with. He can throw a dart and lep it rip once he determines who he’s throwing it to. And the ball not only comes with speed, but very accurate as well. Whether his feet are set or he’s on the run, Michael can deliver the ball where it needs to go. He is able to move around the pocket and come up with a Plan B if necessary, but the entire time still remain to keep his eyes downfield. A shifty runner too, Michael takes off with a burst once he pulls the ball in.

The Montgomery Cougars are always a team in contention. Their QB play has a big part to do with that. Last fall the 7-3 Cougars were led by the 5’10” 170lb junior signal caller Michael Schmelzer Michael Schmelzer 5'11" | 185 lbs | QB Montgomery | 2024 State NJ . Schmelzer passed for 1658 yards, 21 TDs, and 8 Ints; he rushed for 256 yards and 3 TDs.
Schmelzer does a nice job moving around in the pocket and resetting his feet before he launches the ball. He does this to avoid a rush and also set up throwing angles. Speaking of the rush, this signal caller has a little bit of moxie when he is working to avoid the rush. He does a great job of keeping his eyes down field when he scrambles too, always looking for the big play. These big plays are facilitated by constantly hitting his receivers in stride as well. I would love to see Schmelzer start to go through his pass progressions this upcoming season and look defenders off more.
