Matthew Rice is a quarterback who is mobile and decisive, and he has touch on his short throws. He’s in the early stages of development, but Rice has some tools to work with. Rice is comfortable outside of the pocket. Several of his highlights show him making throws on the move, rolling both left and right. This mobility makes Rice a threat in bootleg and play-action schemes. He tends to go with his first read and gets the ball out quickly. The offense he’s in has a quick-game concept, and he operates accordingly. Rice’s highlights have a few plays showing good timing on rhythm throws, like out routes, drags, and short crossing patterns. He also made a couple of completions, catching the receiver in stride. Rice is already solid at selling the play-action enough to freeze linebackers. He looks very mobile, but surprisingly, there are not too many plays of him making things happen with his legs. As he progresses as a quarterback, Rice will get better at going through his progressions. While he is still a raw talent, improvement in footwork, mechanics, and overall pocket presence will take him to the next step in his development.
