. The senior intercepted the first pass of the game by B-W, perfectly jumping the route over the middle. Despite being undersized, Mariano is a menace in the middle of the St. Cat’s defense. He is able to range sideline to sideline and has excellent short area agility to avoid blocks very quickly then get back downhill to meet the ball carrier. The senior always knew where the ball was and was able to get himself to it and involved in the tackle all game long. I left impressed by the senior LB.

The senior ILB played like a heat-seeking missile Friday night. Mariano did a fantastic job of finding the ball and attacking. His acceleration jumps off the tape as he triggers downhill vs the run. He has a strong ability to knife through traffic while avoiding blocks on his way to the tackle. Mariano’s lateral burst to slip off blocks when they do make contact is another key piece to his game. The kid doesn’t stay blocked long if a hand does get on him. On top of it all he is an aggressive tackler who throws his body around and wraps up. Check out the senior!

Mariano put together a strong day, and was able to lock up LB MVP with his play in 1 vs 1s against the RB group. Mariano is clearly an undersized prospect, but as time goes on we see less and less traditional positions and more unique chess pieces that coaches can use to match up with opponents.
Mariano demonstrated that he has the ability to help take away a mismatch. In one on ones guarding RBs in coverage Mariano proved he could change direction, accelerate from his drop or turning to run with the RB. His short area quickness kept him tight to his man, and when the ball arrived he had good timing and was very disruptive at the catch point. While Mariano doesn’t fit the role of a traditional three down LB, he can come in and help on third down against an RB. He proved that on the way to LB MVP.

The sophomore came to the Showcase and participated as a QB, and he turned heads with his performance. While he lacks size, Mariano had the coaches working with QBs in one on one battles hyped. He has quick feet and a quick release. His pinpoint ball placement jumped out from the crowd. He was dropping it over his receiver’s shoulder, placing it right over defenders, and making sure only his man had a chance to haul it in. His performance resulted in him getting one of the three Best of the Best reps. St. Cat’s is looking for their next QB. Mariano might be next.
