Expert Analysis
Chris Smith | Prep Redzone Scout
The Owls defense has been lights out thus far through the early season and Shaw has been a major factor. This 6’1 broad shouldered, well built safety has been making plays all over the field, doing so by picking off passes, making hard hits close to the line and contributing in big ways on special teams. Shaw is an athletic, versatile football player that shows increased football knowledge as well as enhanced speed that shows up on his early clips. He brings value to the defensive side of the ball as someone that is slowly upside to remain on the back end at safety but Shaw is a big guy that plays physical, so I could see him transitioning in college to linebacker or the new “Star” position. If this Memphis area prospect can continue this high level play while also continuing to develop his skills, his recruitment could take off come this Winter.

He showcases the ability to decelerate to make guys miss then instantly accelerate after some contact. Good hips and feet, Shaw displays high end change of direction ability with elusiveness in tight spaces. In coverage, he is a smart underneath zone defender with good eyes and has ball skills. On both sides of the ball, his transitional ability stands out with quality downhill transitions on defense with good up field transitions on offense.

This is one of the more underrated talents from the entire greater city of Memphis as Shaw could excel and develop at multiple positions within the college ranks. Sporting nice size with natural athletic abilities, Shaw is a fast, hard hitter at safety where his upside may be the best but he also has the physicality and speed to develop at running back as well. His versatility is what stands out the most when watching Shaw on film as I feel he could be utilized in a variety of ways. College coaches are beginning to pay attention to this West Tennessee athlete and I feel once they are able to see him work in person at camps, his recruitment will start to take off.
