It was a great showing from the Kaukauna senior DB in a big Week 6 game. The senior was in the slot and on the edge when assigned to a TE. The highlights are only featuring a few clips from the great night, but we see the INT where he is perfectly trailing the TE and then goes up and gets it in front of the TE. The sack on the next play features his speed to get around the OL and chase down the ball before the QB can even get outside the pocket. We see more of that range on the final play along with the awareness to see and read the play design then attack the QB and bring him down while also punching out the football.
Laythan is a kid that I am liking more and more every time I watch him. He has a strong 5’10” 180 lbs frame that he has built to be able to deliver some powerful tackles. It is eye-opening how versatile he is as a safety. He has the physicality to be a box safety, filling vs the run and being an effective blitzer off the edge. But he is way more than box safety. Laythan has made some wildly impressive plays in coverage. He has the range to be able to turn and run/close/recover with a WR or TE. I love the awareness he shows downfield too. That includes a play where he basically covered two guys at once and was able to get a PBU out of it. If that dynamic playmaking ability at safety isn’t enough, Hurst also flashes his big play potential as a kick returner. Hurst is an electric defender and athlete in the Class of 2027.
This is another intriguing, under the radar prospect. Laythan plays primarily at the safety and slot CB positions. The 5’10” 180 lbs athlete has a compact frame that is strongly built and has a lot of explosive burst loaded into it. Burst that has made him a great blitzer and also really good at playing tight coverage vs quick routes. When Hurst does play deeper in coverage he gets to display how well he can read and close on the ball in front of him. Plus the 2027 also offers some big play ability as a kick returner.
