Expert Analysis
Ed OBrien | Prep Redzone Scout
Hawley thrives in a quick game/RPO-heavy system, executing with timing and solid mechanics. His passing highlights emphasize short to intermediate accuracy, anticipation, and a calm presence in the pocket. Hawley may not flash elite velocity or off-platform creation, but he’s a reliable decision-maker. He recently committed to Hampton University. He’s a high-floor, development quarterback suited for offenses that emphasize quick reads, timing routes, and play-action/RPO elements. I’d like to see Mason take more intermediate-to-deep shots downfield this season that show up on film.

The Kempsville QB picked up his first offer Wednesday from Hampton. Josh shows good pocket presence as a QB and waits for the play to develop, he never seems panicked or rattled. He goes though his progressions and waits for a receiver to get separation and hits the open man. He is always scanning and using his eyes to manipulate the defense. He shows footwork and mobility within the pocket, he is always actively moving and scanning. He has great touch on his passes, throwing spirals that are very catchable. He facilitates the offense and makes intelligent decisions with the ball. Look for a breakout year statistically for the Kempsville Senior as he has multiple weapons and has taken a lot of reps with his receiving corps.

6’1, 180 pounds. A soon-to-be senior out of Kempsville HS. Put on a good five pounds since the last time his PRZ profile was updated.
Question I Want Answered: How/Why did Hawley fall through the cracks during the ranking process?
It’s been quite some time since the last time I dug into Kempsville prospects. Looking back, Hawley wasn’t on our initial 2026 list because of the lack of tape. Looking at his Hudl now, he has about two minutes’ worth of throws from this past Fall season. This answers my question above, yet I present Hawley with another. If graded now, how high/low would he rank among a special 2026 Virginia QB class? I decided not to take too much of a peek into Hawley’s tape, so that Sunday’s evaluation can give me an idea without any preconceived notions. That being said, it’ll be a first impression, one that will likely have an effect on his future placement on our ranks. Excited to see what he has in store.
