John Johnson is a playmaker from his slot defensive back position. He attacks the ball in the air and is dangerous with the ball in his hands after turnovers. Johnson shows strong range, able to make plays in the flats after starting from the safety position. He will be a strong addition playing across from Moore, making the Dundalk defense something to watch during the 2026–2027 season.

Johnson is a strong safety who plays with confidence and fluidity of a cornerback. He reacts to anything in front of him, as shown on a bubble screen where he diagnosed the play quickly and delivered a hard hit. His highlights show that he states patient in coverage and likes to read the quarterbacks eyes. That lead to him getting multiple interceptions where he tracks under thrown passes and catches them at their highest point. Johnson’s ability to match up with receivers in the slot helps give his defense an advantage. He definitely understands the game and trusts his instincts. I’d ask to see more plays of him handling the run, but I think he’s a cornerback playing safety, and I’m impressed with that I see from him coverage wise so far.
