Expert Analysis
Matt Di Domenico | Prep Redzone Scout
An explosive LB/DE that plays with outstanding pursuit and effort. Jason Hargrove will use his fast hands to shed off blocks to provide pressure in the backfield. The ability to mix his power and speed was evident at the DE position. The speed to get to the inside to pressure the QB is there. Equally important at the LB position, Hargrove fills lanes and makes TFLs.

Hargrove may be a sophomore but he has three years of varsity experience. After being highly touted as an 8th grader and as a freshman, Jason finally made the All-WNY team in 2025. He is one of the top DE prospects in WNY with over 200 tackles and 16 sacks in his career and those numbers get better by the year. On top of being named to the All-WNY team, Hargrove was also Class AA Co-Defensive MVP.

Hargrove has been playing varsity football since he was in 8th grade. That is not often seen, especially in Class AA. But Jason is a different breed. The talent he has displayed in the previous two seasons is beyond his years. He read and reacts well and has excellent awareness. He is versatile enough to line up on either side of the ball.

A quick footed DE with solid form, Hargrove began his varsity career in 8th grade. Now with two years under his belt, he has improved immensely. He led all Freshmen with 5 sacks in 2024 and added 46 tackles (7 for loss). This is a player that will only get better as his playing time goes along.

Hargrove Jr. is the only guy from Buffalo and, to my knowledge, all of CNY & WNY who was a key piece on his team as an 8th grader last season. Hargrove Jr.’s role got bigger this year with some key graduations from Bennett.
Hargrove Jr put up some strong numbers this year for Bennett
46 Tackles – 5 Sacks – 7 TFLs – 2 PDs
Key TE/FB Blocking Reps in a Bennett run-first offense
As an EDGE prospect and a freshman, he needs to continue growing height-wise to add some length and strength in the weight room. However, for a freshman, he certainly is built well with some strength in his upper body. He is a strong enough prospect to shed blocks and create some explosive punches at the point of attack. I was able to get eyes on him late in the season, and there is a lot to like. Once his full-season film is out, I should be able to complete a more thorough evaluation.

Not many 8th graders get a starting position on a varsity football team. But

did. Hargrove has all the skills you want in a Defensive End; he is quick, has great hand technique and excellent awareness. I expect Hargrove to take a major leap forward and lead the Tigers in sacks in 2024.

The only 8th grader on this list, Hargrove came in and made an immediate impact at Defensive End for the Tigers helping the team gain their third straight Class AA Championship. Jason is quick off the ball with great hand technique and a solid tackler. He finished the 2023 season with 54 tackles (10 for loss) and 3 sacks. Standing at 5’11 210 lbs, Jason Hargrove is only going to get bigger as he is in just 8th grade. And if his first season on Varsity was any indication, he will be a force for the next four years and a highly recruited player for many Division I colleges.

Jason Hargrove Jr. is a dynamic 6’0 200 pound athletic big man out of Buffalo, New York. OK this dude is a physical bully with reps at DL/OL/MLB/DE/RB. My man Hargrove Jr. is built for Friday nights now, like right now! He is a monster on defense that haunts every play caller in the region. Half of his tackles in the backfield are by literally throwing ball carriers to the ground before they even get started. His get off is insane and he uses his hands violently to disrupt anything coming his way. Stand him up, put his hand in the dirt, let him sit in a folding chair for all I care, he can’t be blocked for an entire play. Hargrove Jr. is chiseled out of heavy bones that packs a punch every time he makes contact. I cannot wait to see how he develops at the next level.
