Prep Redzone Iowa last wrote about Roberts following a Class of 2027 rankings update early last July. It’s a good time to revisit the prospect with a fresh evaluation following a productive junior campaign for Muscatine this past fall. Roberts caught 12 balls for 348 yards (29.0 YPC) and four touchdowns in seven games. He added 21.5 tackles, 13 of which were solo stops, and 2.5 tackles for loss in earning honorable mention all-district honors. Roberts’ opportunities in the passing game are limited operating in a offense geared to the run. The system highlighted his blocking, however, and he cashed in on the chances he received. We can see all of them when watching his 11th-grade highlight video. Roberts gets off of the line and into his routes quickly, showing speed in the open field. He operates with good technique as a blocker and will become even better in that area with room to fill out his projectable frame.

Muscatine’s James Roberts James Roberts 6'5" | 200 lbs | TE Muscatine | 2027 IA is a player we’ve had on our radar since the end of his freshman year when he first flashed his upside. Now, it looks like James could be set up to take on a bigger role in the Muskies’ offense. James has a great frame for the tight end position at 6’5″ and 200 pounds, with room to continue packing on muscle in the next couple of seasons. We don’t have a ton of film on him, but in the clips available, he displayed strong hands at the catch point and can use his size to take advantage of mismatches. James could also see a bigger role on the defensive line after playing there for the Muscatine reserve team. James has the tools and open opportunities to turn some heads this fall.

Roberts got his feet wet at the varsity level in 2024, catching one pass for 30 yards and working on his blocking. He’s growing into a position that requires development time. In reviewing individual game highlights on his Hudl page, we can see an athletic playmaker with plenty of room to go before reaching his ceiling.
