It’s perhaps a little harsh to label the well-established Jones as a sleeper, but compared to some of the other top prospects in the area, he seems to slide a bit under the radar. He’s a long, athletic defensive back who can play multiple positions. He probably doesn’t get enough credit from stat-watchers who see that he didn’t have an interception last year. That said, he’s one of the best coverage safeties you’ll find, and he’s not afraid to come down and hit in the box, either.
Jones was a recent addition to the 2027 rankings after a breakout junior season. He’s an all-around athlete whom Dudley simply wants on the field. That bodes well for his upside, as he’s just tapping into his potential as a safety. Jones’ only varsity experience before this season was actually at quarterback, then he contributed as an explosive receiver and box safety as a junior. He could ultimately play linebacker as a senior, but for now, I like that Dudley deploys him as a versatile chess piece to take advantage of his speed and athleticism.
Jones has serious athleticism and can line up in a variety of positions. He averaged over 20 yards per catch on offense, and lined up at free safety, slot corner, and even linebacker as a defender. He’s best as a hybrid box safety who can cause fits against the run, but his length and speed give him great coverage upside, as well. We’re excited to see how he continues to develop over the next year.
