Expert Analysis

Two words sum up Solum – football player. A rare linebacker and quarterback combo, the junior is a solid dual-threat quarterback. He can push the ball down the field and can make people miss in the running game. As good as he is on offense, he was selected all-area because of his play at linebacker. During the season, he totaled nearly 140 total tackles. His speed on offense is easy to see, but his quickness and explosiveness are even more evident when he closes in on a ball carrier and explodes into ball carriers.

2022 9man state runner-up Spring Grove is well-represented in our latest 2024 rankings update. With size and athleticism abound in their 2024 graduating class, the Lions are poised to make another deep run into the state playoffs, and once again will be led by 6’1, 185 lb. QB/MLB Elijah Solum. Also a stud hooper, Solum’s speed, quickness, and balance with the ball in hand helped him create some splash offensive plays and exciting runs with multiple broken tackles and opponents grasping at air while he cruised by them. He’s a natural at freezing opponents feet, and Solum also got a big arm when dropping back as a QB and can stretch the field when his wideouts get open. I also love how hard he tackles and sticks RBs when given the chance, but he shines brightest when the ball is in hand and his nose for the endzone is strongest. Only MSU-Moorhead has reached out to the small-schooler so far. Good call by the Dragons.

is a bruising middle linebacker and a dual threat Quarterback, leading the charge and directing traffic for both his offense and defense. At Quarterback, Solum is as unpredictable as he is hard to stop. He can take off at the drop of a hat, chuck a ball 50 yards down the field, zip it into tight coverage if necessary, and has a knack for throwing both out of the pocket and on the move. Defensively, he looks like the strongest and fastest guy out there. He takes great pursuit angles to cut down the distance between him and a ball carrier, and once he gets there, he absolutely flattens them, initiating contact and driving through the tackle with his legs. This versatility has made him one of Spring Grove’s biggest threats heading into the fall, where he will look to have his best season yet.
