About Derek

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I consider my gameplay style very aggressive and in your face defensively. As far as offense I’ve always been the feature back for my football teams being the only Runningback.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I consider myself a very hard worker. I believe in not stopping because there is always competition out there and someone that is always trying to be better than you. As far as my personality I am easy going and a team player but I’m hungry for success.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I am in the top 10 in my class. My parents have instilled academic values in me and I understand that in order to succeed in sports I have to be successful in education.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I am a leader in every sense of the word. But I also like to observe environments before I interject myself. I believe in teamwork because we win as a team and lose as a team.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

My biggest significant challenge was receiving my first major rejection in life. I worked hard to get into a program where you are able to attend any private school around the world for free. I believed that I did enough to get into one of the schools but it was very competitive. I believed that that was my only way into playing football for one of these top teams, but now I am working harder.

What type of college are you looking for?

I am open to all colleges and experiences. I want to attend diverse schools with a great football program with great coaching that will utilize me and make me better.

I think it should be pretty telling that three out of the four Running Backs that were selected to the 1st Team All-Combine are headed to SJR in the fall. Burgess has turned the corner physically, up three inches and 20 pounds since our last check. He looked explosive throughout testing drills and carried over the same stop/start skill set on the field.
