About Caniyus
Expert Analysis
Matt Morrow | Prep Redzone Scout
After an All-Conference season last year, Caniyus should have much more college football recruiting attention, in my opinion. Caniyus showed his positional versatility this past season, playing on both sides of the line of scrimmage. As a defensive lineman, Caniyus does a great job of reading the play and immediately shedding blocks to make tackles on the interior of the defense. Caniyus shows some excellent quickness in pass rush situations and good closing speed to get to the quarterback. Caniyus currently has offers from East Carolina and Troy in terms of college football recruiting.

While some programs are recruiting Rushing as an offensive lineman, we like him best on the defensive side of the ball. He’s a high-upside pass-rusher who created plenty of pressure this season. In the running game, he’s unafraid to take on double-teams and he plays with mjore strength than his frame would suggest.

Rushing impressed Matt Morrow at his CFI Showcase in mid-May and I like the film. The question will be whether Rushing plays more on the inside or outside at the college level as he plays everywhere along the defensive line for Monroe. He’s put on some good weight in the last few months, implying he’s likely to find future success at defensive tackle, but he has a couple of years to continue to hone his game.

Caniyus is a 2027 prospect who came into this showcase with some early FBS offers from East Carolina and Troy, respectively, and he backed up those offers with a strong performance. Caniyus showed some really good get-off at the snap and had some nice power moves to shed blocks during the 1 on 1 portion of the showcase. You can see as he continues to grow physically, with his quickness, Caniyus is going to be a real problem for offensive linemen going forward.

Monroe always seems to have top level talent coming out of their program, and Caniyus looks like he could be the next success story for the Redhawks. With early Division 1 offers already, Caniyus has shown some elite traits to go along with his impressive size. Caniyus right now flashes a good first step along with impressive strength to shed blocks in both the running game and when rushing the passer. Caniyus has a chance to blow up once he hits the summer camp circuit and colleges see him up close.

There are a bunch of really talented defensive linemen at smaller schools and Rushing is one of them. His stats as a sophomore were good, but don’t tell the whole story of his dominance. Rushing has excellent gap integrity and can stonewall double-teams in the running game. He’s a patient and persistent pass-rusher who can cause interior disruption. He certainly hasn’t reached his ceiling as a pass-rusher and that potential makes him a candidate to move up from our Group of Five bucket to a true Power Four prospect.
