San Diego St. continued to add local talent by picking up a commitment from one of the top WR/DBs in the county. Cardwell added 10 D-I offers since his productive junior season in which he totaled 400 receiving yards and 5 TDs on offense and 2 INTs on defense. He’s an athletic two-way player with the burst, ball skills, and instincts to develop into a high-impact playmaker in the secondary at the next level. Cardwell chose the Aztecs over other offers from Arizona, Boise St., and NAU among others.

Cardwell is a versatile athlete whose skillset transitions well to both sides of the ball at WR and DB. At 6’3” 180 lbs. he uses his length well to play the ball at the high point with good timing, extension, and leaping ability. Possesses a lot of upside as a major D1 DB prospect where he is smooth with his movement and footwork. He transitions well out of his backpedal and into his break using his short area burst to close space with the ball in the air. A physical DB that can jam receivers at the LOS to force them off their line and gain positional leverage from the snap. He’s patient limiting wasted movement but his reactionary quickness and speed allows him to stay in phase at all three levels. Strong genes, brother Byron Cardwell was a top RB recruit in the 2023 class that racked up 23 offers before committing to Oregon and then transferring to Cal. Recruiting stock has continued to rise since the new year bringing in nine D1 offers including four P4 programs.

Cardwell was a new addition to the 2025 WR rankings after adding offers from Cal, San Diego St., Central Michigan, Oregon St., and Washington St. over the past month. The athletic two-way standout (WR/DB) totaled 400 yards and 5 TDs on offense and 2 INTs as a perimeter CB. He’s a skilled cover-corner that can jam and disrupt front-end routes in press-man and plays with strong instincts in soft zone. On offense, he’s most effective on in-breaking routes in the short-intermediate area where he can utilize his stop-start agility and deceptiviness as a route-runner to create separation. Cardwell, who’s brother was a highly recruited RB out of high school (now at Cal), will be one of the top two-way skill players in San Diego’s senior class this fall.
