Expert Analysis
Rob Howe | Prep Redzone Scout
There’s been a steady flow of Bruenings working their way through the Charles City program. Bill announced his arrival as a sophomore last season. The defensive back/running back collected 29.5 tackles, 17 of which were solo stops. He forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, intercepted a ball and defended three passes. Bruening averaged 16.4 yards on 10 kick returns and saw action on offense. He provides evidence as to how he gets the job done during his 10th-grade highlight video. He’s a natural deep safety, identifying what the opponent is planning before the snap, communicating what he sees to teammates and doing his job. A good athlete with speed and lateral quickness, he blankets receivers in coverage. He also gets downhill in a hurry to stuff the running game. That pursuit is aided by him breaking down the ball carrier and delivering technically-sound form tackles. As good as Bruening was a sophomore, he has a chance to take a significant step forward this coming campaign.
