Expert Analysis
Chris Smith | Prep Redzone Scout
Joining alongside Scott in the Rebels linebacking corp, Smith is the team’s versatile backer that can be used in multiple roles and that skill set is something that appeals greatly to collegiate coaches. Standing 6’3 210 plus pounds, Smith has the height, length and body style to compete on the next level along with the room for more size. This is a fast linebacker with range to chase down the ball from sideline to sideline but also rush the backfield, getting after the quarterback. Smith does a good job of using his physicality and speed to get into blockers then shed them before he is able to get locked up. The Rebels senior defender simply has a nose for the ball that will only enhance further as he grows and matures inside the college game. Senior Film

is one of the best linebackers in his class that can play off ball and edge. He is a leader for Knoxville West and just makes big time plays every time he steps on the field. Versus the run, Smith shows plus instincts to read run concepts and can set the edge with solid strength and technique. Good feel to slip blocks, he is a quality athlete out in space. When rushing the passer, he shows good hand usage and understanding of leverage.

proved why he is one of the better players in the state of Tennessee in this game. Throughout the entire game, he showed instincts and toughness to be involved in almost every run stop. He was diagnosing concepts and shooting gaps to make tackles at or near the line of scrimmage. Defensively, Smith looked like a man on a mission, being constantly in the backfield of the Bulldogs.

Truly under the radar as we head into summer camp season, Smith is an athletic, active and physical linebacker that has the size, speed and potential that translates well to the next level but he is still biding his time before those offers start to arrive. Smith had a breakout season last year as his team’s leading tackler and key force on defense that helped lead the Rebels to a state title. When you watch his film, what you see is an active backer that shows great instincts for finding the ball and the speed to chase down the ball from anywhere on the field. The Rebels senior prospect fits best at inside linebacker but Smith has the athleticism and burst to play on the edge if needed as I think he sports underrated pass rush abilities. He also has a good frame to tack on more weight and fill out his body much further, especially once he gets into a college weight system. For one reason or another, college coaches have yet to get on board with this Knoxville area defender but I feel it’s only a matter of time before Smith sees his recruitment take off. Watch for this guy over the coming months as he could be a major camp star but also string together another strong football season that eventually puts him into the college ranks.

Smith is ahigh-motor player with more physicality. Smith is also a dangerous pass-rusher, his first step is explosive. Able to win with quickness on the edge; can challenge the outside with speed and work his way back in. Active with his hands and has a viable rip move. Good ankle/hip flexibility to work around the edge.
