This group of kids each had a good Freshman campaign and I am looking forward to their next three years. Each kid made the most of their opportunities and made some good highlights. Take a look at the future of South Dakota High School Football.
Lincoln LeBrun RB/LB- Dell Rapids St. Mary’s, Highlights
LeBrun has a good amount of varsity tape in his Freshman season. What impresses me about his tape it that he definitely earned his was out there. The level of physicality he shows in his first season at the Varsity level has me excited for his future. Whether it’s running the football or making the tackle, he will stick his shoulder pad in the play and finish through the whistle. I like how he hits the pile with conviction when the ball is in his hands, not hitting defenders before they hit him. Defensively, he flows to the ball well and squares up the ballcarrier for a good form tackle.
Waylon Bolle RB- Corsica/Stickney, Highlights
Bolle is another Freshman with a great deal of Varsity snaps. Watching the tape, you’d never know how young he is. His size and speed makes him look like a seasoned veteran. The way he runs the ball makes him a lot of fun to watch. He takes the handoff at full speed, and does not slow down for anything. When he finds the gap, he hits it hard and accelerates into the open field. While I’m harping on his speed, let me talk about his physicality too. If a defender can get a good angle on him, he has no problem lowering his shoulder or delivering a stiff arm through the defender.
Jesiah Baum RB- Warner, Highlights
Baum didn’t seem to have a lot of Varsity snaps on tape, but I still think he’ll be a problem for opposing defenses in the next few years. I like how he follows his blocks and is patient waiting for space to open up. He has a lot of speed and agility, but knows when and how to use it effectively. Moving around the offensive scheme at many positions, he shows some versatility playing each position well. An underrated quality I’ll highlight for him, is his play running ability. Whether he’s designed to get the ball or run a fake, he carries out each play extremely well.
Owen Haas RB/LB- Deuel, Highlights
Haas is a kid that got a lot of garbage time snaps, but made the most of each of them. This is a kid that really shows that the ‘next man up’ mentality can work. I believe he stood out in those important snaps he got late in games because he showed his ‘pedal to the metal’ work ethic. He runs the ball very hard and shows a good amount of speed with the ball. Defensively, he also flies around and finds himself in the play and makes a good form tackle. I saw some JV clips of him playing as well and once the confidence transfers to the varsity level, I can see a lot of success for him in the next three years.
Bryce Hawkinson RB/LB- Britton/Hecla, Highlights
Hawkinson is a speedster that will find a big role on the field for the next few years. Watching him run the ball was pretty entertaining. His speed and agility made him very hard to corral and wrap up. One thing on his tape that stood out was he refused to go down when just one guy had him wrapped up, he was always looking to fight for extra yards every play. If the speed couldn’t get him free, his physicality would. Either lowering his shoulder, or throwing a stiff arm into the defender’s face, he was going to gain a couple more yards. Defensively, he played well in the run and pass game, flying around and finding the point of attack.
Derek Brueggeman QB- Miller/Highmore/Harrold, Highlights
Brueggeman had a few Varsity snaps on tape and made some good impressions on them. I really like his mobility in the backfield. He is very elusive to defenders and will not go down easy in the backfield. Shaking out of leg tackles and extending plays out of the pocket with his eyes downfield. I like watching him throw on the run. It is very accurate and he finds the open guy for a positive play every time. His pocket presence is impressive, the way he moves around and evades pressure. Lastly, he makes very good decisions when it comes to throwing the ball or running it, usually ending in a positive play for the offense.
Ryan Neugebauer LB- St. Thomas More, Highlights
Neugebauer plugged right into the Cavalier defense and played extremely well at it. He knew his position and executed his role each and every play, and did it well. Doing his job on every play, he made the plays that came to him, rather than trying make plays and leaving his spot open. Not flashy by any means, he filled his gap properly and made the sure-handed tackle on each play. His form on his tackles was near perfect, getting low and wrapping up around the legs and making sure the ballcarrier went to the ground. Lastly, I like his confidence, he moved around at full speed knowing his job and doing his job every play.
