Cassel earned the MVP award last Monday by leading the South team to a win. His arm strength is clear, as he threw for 372 yards/game his senior year and netted 33 touchdowns. He threw for two touchdowns and showed poise in the all-star environment, distributing the ball to the plethora of weapons at his disposal. He stood tall in the pocket when asked, extended plays with his feet, and used the entire field with screens and a shovel pass early. He knew when to take advantage of his chemistry with fellow West Valley product Benjamin Pupplo to score first on a simple crossing route. He marched his team down on the game-winning drive with a great mix of bullets and a tight-window lob to score the winner. He received an offer to Utah Tech on Saturday and committed on Tuesday to end an eventful recruiting cycle.
Highlights
Bentre Worthy
Bentre Worthy
Worthy was as deserving as his name implies of the North’s MVP award. He nearly connected with JT Weir for a 25-yard touchdown on his first play in the game, where he quickly exited the pocket and launched it right at the line of scrimmage. He continued to make accurate throws on the run during the game, and picked up running room where available. Over the practices, he exhibited a pretty spiral with a good balance of zip and touch. In addition to his dual threat capabilities, he can be a gunslinger if he keeps developing his remarkably strong arm. He had his best drive when the team needed it, using his wheels to pick up first downs when targets were covered. He scored a rushing TD before converting a pass for 2 to keep the game within a field goal. His recruitment is still open.
Jones Stalker
Jones Stalker
Stalker led the South defense by laying the boom. He continually punished ballcarriers who made it into his vicinity with his tackling style, where he wraps as he thumps and lays them out. He’s an alert player with good play recognition and feet that react to it well. His vision helps him in pass coverage, where he grabbed a few picks; his ball skills translate from his WR play. He was also the first one downfield as the punter bobbled the snap in the 2nd, and tackled him to force the fumble that resulted in a TD by Elijah Comoza. Stalker had one offer before the game, but received an offer to Central Washington and committed immediately on the 23rd.
Weir is a well-known speedster who was already committed to Eastern Washington, but couldn’t wait to show out one more time in his high school helmet. He brought the confidence and energy in every bit of practice as he sets high expectations for himself on every play. He hauled in several important catches for the North and was an official’s interference away from the highlight play of the game with the aforementioned Worthy. He’s always one move away from being in space, where his wheels turn on like a switch. His quickness and balance gave every DB trouble last weekend. He’ll look to make an immediate impact on EWU and the rest of the Mountain West this fall.
Tibodeau had a decent first half, then became a menace in the 2nd with three sacks, including a crucial sack-fumble to set up Worthy’s drive. His first displayed great timing, as he went behind the other DT to smack the QB straight-up with his speed. His second was split with Reece James, as he pushed his blocker back until he met the QB Reece was chasing down. But his third was the most glorious, as he pulled a spin move away from the double team he found himself in. This put him in striking distance to the QB, where he broke down and planted his shoulder in the QB’s midsection as he wrapped, engulfing his arms and knocking the ball out. He had a good weekend of practice as the North 5:00 DL challenged each other, but stood out as a gamer in the most crucial moments. His recruitment is still open.
