The state was full of great games and new prospects emerged with each game. Multiple running backs stole the show this weekend and got their season off to a big start.
Here are a few running backs who had standout performances last weekend.
Daba Fofana – West Forsyth
He’s not the biggest guy at 5-foot-9 190-pounds, but the Navy commitment had no problem running through the Mays defense last weekend in a big 42-6 win. Fofana is a patient runner with good agility and lateral movement. He broke tackles with ease and always seems to fall forwards at the end of his runs. He’s tough as nails and plays the position the right way. His footwork, quickness, and ability to run behind his pads make him so tough to tackle for opposing defenders. He worked hard in the offseason to perfect his craft and the hard work payed off in game 1 of the season. Fofana ended the day with 13 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns while catching 5 passes for 52 yards and another score.
Braylen Stokes – Walton
Maybe the biggest surprise performance came from backup Raider running back, Braylen Stokes. The Raider offense was rolling right along against rival Kell in the run game, but things looked to be going downhill after an injury to starting running back Kenny Djaha. The Raiders were down 12 late in the 3rd quarter, and that’s when Stokes took over. On just 13 carries, Stokes rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns, with the final score being a 29-yard game-winner. He showed tremendous balance, tackle-breaking ability, and above average speed. He was a big play waiting to happen, and he should see more carries coming his way over the next few weeks.
Anthony Ferguson – Troup County
A West Georgia back to had a “life-changing” type of game is Lagrange native, Anthony Ferguson. The productive senior had a monster game in a losing effort to Harris County rushing for 225 yards on just 24 carries. He scored his team’s only touchdowns, reaching the end-zone twice in a 28-14 loss. Ferguson isn’t the biggest back, but his speed, change of direction, and overall balance make him a pain to tackle for any defender. He’s shifty, has great burst, and has the big-play ability to score on any particular play. Expect Ferguson to have a monster senior season if he continues to run like he did in the season opener.
