Cooksey led the Lions to a 4A state championship as they knocked off defending champ Wagoner in the title game. All season, Cooksey was one of, if not the very best quarterback in Class 4A. He put up monster numbers and took advantage of a very talented and deep receiver group. He spread the love around and was hard to defend because he knew where to go with the ball and when. Cooksey is joining Jackson at NEO and just like the Chandler standout, Cooksey will have a good chance to move on from NEO in a few years.

Cooksey was one of the best quarterbacks in the state this season and the thing that always impressed us about his game this year was his ability to distribute the ball all over the field. Granted, Cooksey benefitted from having some very good players at the skill positions but he put up some very impressive numbers. The senior threw for nearly 3,200 yards and 29 touchdowns. He had a receiver with 800+ yards, 700+ yards and 600+ yards this year. When we say he distributed the ball, that’s what we’re talking about. There aren’t many other quarterbacks in the state that had that kind of spread at the wide receiver position. Cooksey also played well in some of the biggest games this year. He came into this season as one of the more experienced quarterbacks in Class 4A and it showed.

Cooksey has taken his game to new heights this season and leads a Blanchard offense that is one of the best in the class. The senior is just a few yards shy of 3,000 yards for the season and has 28 touchdowns with just six interceptions. And the thing that impresses us the most about Cooksey is his distribution to different receivers. As we mentioned with Carter, three different receivers have at least 500 yards. Cooksey also is a threat in the run game with eight rushing touchdowns.

Blanchard senior quarterback has been one of the better quarterbacks in Class 4A over the last few seasons. He’s taken his game to new heights this year. Not only is he one of the top passers in the class but he’s shown an ability to tuck the ball and run when he needs to do so. And the scary part about Cooksey is he has weapons at the wide receiver position and he knows how to read defenses. He finds the open man and they have a complete balance at the wide receiver position with their production. Cooksey will look to lead the Lions to their third gold ball in school history.

The only game we saw Cooksey in person was the game against Tuttle where both teams had massive problems with the wind. Despite that, Cooksey was putting the ball on a rope to his receivers. And the Lions are going to need their senior quarterback to be at his best this week. Poteau has one of the best defenses in the state and not just in Class 4A so points will come at a premium.

Cooksey helped lead the Lions to a district championship and a favorable path on the road to Edmond. Cooksey was one of the more efficient quarterbacks in Class 4A this season and has cut back dramatically on his turnovers from last season. The Blanchard senior has thrown for over 2,300 yards and 22 touchdowns this season with only 5 interceptions. This is Cooksey’s third season of at least 20 touchdown passes.

Okay look, both teams struggled offensively so you can make the argument that no offensive player should be listed here. We just added him to our PRZ-Oklahoma Player Of The Year watchlist on Friday. And no quarterback was going to really have success throwing the ball in the wind. But Cooksey still made some throws that warranted him being considered one of the best quarterbacks in Class 4A. Some throws got carried away by the wind and then he put others on an absolute dot to his intended receiver. Cooksey still impressed us on Friday night and the final numbers aren’t a total indicator of how well Cooksey played in the win over rival Tuttle.

But there is no doubt that this week’s test against Tuttle will be their toughest district test. They just beat a top five team in Newcastle last week and now they have another top five opponent. Cooksey and the Lions look to take control of the district title race with a win.
