SIOUX FALLS, SD-- My camp season continues with stop #3 as we spent last Sunday in Sioux Falls at the Augustana University Prospect Camp, their first one of the summer camp season. This was my second trip out to Vikings Country for camp and yet again, I had a blast covering new prospects, prospects I have scouted for a few years now, and names that really popped out at me as upcoming stockrisers in their respective classes. We start with Part I, as we look at a solid amount of prospects that really turned the corner with a live evaluation on Sunday which is my absoulute favorite way to evaluate, get on the road and see every prospect I can see on the camp circuit.

Cordell has been high on radar for a while here in Minnesota, and continued that trend upwards at the Augie camp last Sunday. He is one of the most physical corners in all of Minnesota and despite not being the biggest kid on the corners, he makes up for it with his athleticism to a high degree. Cordell has glue instincts that will keep a WR right in his wheelhouse especially as a press-corner. I have watched this kid for nearly three years in his development, and I can’t say enough about his great character and willingness to always compete against the best. I have seen Power Five WRs struggle going up against this kid which paints a college football future in my eyes.

This was my first live evaluation of Jackson, and he left a bigger impression on me in-person than on tape. Regardless of the drill, warmup, etc. that got ran at the Augustana University Camp this kid was a workhorse in every drill. He may have not put up the fastest times amongst running backs, but you bet your rear end he finished his drills with finesse that goes into a prospect that has the tools to play at the next level.- Jackson is a very efficient pass-catcher that uses his vertical nicely with highly contested balls and averaged a whooping 24 yards per catch in the 2021 season with just under a dozen catches. This young man is a lightning spark in the Hanson Beavers offense and I have some great odds that the Beavers will be a 9-man program to watch in 2022.

We added Landon to our 2025 Watch List last week, and on Sunday this young man made us look real good for doing so. Landon caught my attention from the start of his route, as he makes much longer strides than you would expect for his 6’0 size. That striding sets a significant tone against shorter striding DBs as ones that press Landon won’t be able to catch up as that is where he gets his separation and quickly. Landon’s long lower body pays dividends on the defensive side of the ball too, as he shows a solid vertical for his age to as a deeper safety to get up and make a play. I can’t wait to see what kind of noise this kid will make at the varsity level for the Brandon Valley Lynx as I think there will be some fireworks in Brandon in the coming years with this young man.

Talk about a linebacker that took off the roof as a new addition to my eyes in South Dakota’s 2023 class, meet Tyler Horner of Sioux Falls Jefferson. Not only did this young man show off some solid vision in drills but his assurance to get to the ball carrier was well-noted and evaluated during Sunday’s Augustana University Prospect Camp. I referred him as a downhill freight train that has lost it brakes and just comes barreling down the tracks as Tyler had that "wow" factor in place from Sunday. Tyler also shows off swift hands and is a DB build (6’0 185) in a linebacker body that could add 10-15 pounds to solidify his position even stronger. There is no question this kid outplays his measurables with his consistent contact level, but really look for this kid to climb heavily up our 2023 rankings as we will release them before football season starts.

[player_tooltip player_id="273639" first="Gabe" last="Tschetter"] | LB | Sioux Falls O’Gorman (SD) | 2023

Gabe is a LB prospect from the Knights that I of course knew going into the Augiustana Prospect Camp, but this was a kid I loved getting a live evaluation up close. Gabe came out as one of my first three stickouts of the day, when I caught him over at the pro agility testing, where he struck a chord early with his excellent ability to change directions which when you watch his tape, matches up nicely when you see him get off his blocks and having to change his angles. Gabe has a sound balance of run/pass coverage when you grab a hold of his tape, which is somewhat of a rarity at the LB position in the Dakotas. When you see him in pass coverage you see more comfortability than most linebackers in the Dakotas in my eyes which might position him better for the DB position at the next-level. I am really surprised how under the radar this kid is, as not just his talents on the field are superb, he also really gets in done in the classroom with a 4.2 GPA and a 27 on the ACT. I would offer this young man quickly if I was a college coach.

[player_tooltip player_id="313206" first="Kellen" last="Johnson"] | QB | Pipestone (MN) | 2023

Myself and other area scouts have had some conversations about Kellen’s development from what I watched in the playoffs last season for the Arrows, to what I saw Sunday at the Augustana University Prospect Camp is trending highly in the right direction for this young man. What was the biggest difference in my eyes? This young man played with a lot more poise in 1v1s than I witnessed in the 2021 season as he went thru his progressions smoothly. He’s also turned the corner with his ball placement as on Sunday in Sioux Falls, Kellen showed not just great arm strength but put the ball in a quality spot for his WR to make the best possible play for yards after the catch. He’s shown improvement since the 2021 season, but I would love to see Kellen accumulate more touch on his short routes. Like this kid as a scholarship-level QB at the next level.
